t4molie is right. I bought the car I wanted. Its reliable, sort of accessible and a darn sight more subtle than an evo

Compare like for like if you must make comparisons (ie a £30k scoob with a £30k EVO)

Why are you comparing a Prodrive prepared Impreza against a standard Evo VII ?

Maybe a FQ300 VII against a STI PPP would be fairer..but even so my money would be on the standard 7 winning against the PPP'd STi.

But the evo is reliable, accessible and the VIII particularly in 260 guise is very subtle.

Who on earth told you that rubbish.
LOL, I have to laugh at you boys trying ever so hard to pick holes in the Lancer not really being a "UK" car just so that the your argument stands up against the Impreza.
But when the boot is on the other foot you are quick to mention that a Spec C is quicker around the ring than any Evo. But hang on a minute, the Spec C is only available in Japan so that don't count

At the end of the day, people like either car for different reasons and I think I summed it up rather well in my earlier post about the Impreza being softer. I would prefer to drive a Scooby than a Lancer purely for that reason but please don't come on here saying that your UK Impreza is faster than any EVO because they are not. How many track tests does it take to convince you people of this?

er, because of the facts that they are both available in the uk, similar weight, similar performance and have a similar pricetag.
come on.

compare apples with apples at least.

I like the evo as much as the next guy but I am at least willing to compare them on level playing fields.
as do more and more people on the MLR.

I enjoy it tbh.
call it guilt for my part in the Gangsta thread , but its good to allow yourself to be baited once in a while.
methinks there will be more and more 260 owners calling in because they are well and truely rounded on over on the MLR.
also, I see this as an opportunity to try to educate J. Coffey aka my very own Eliza Dolittle.

Both awesome cars and the gap between the EVO and the STi is ever decreasing since the MY05 STi.

Let's be honest....... I could probably count on one hand (ok a few more, but you get the point) the people that would be able to take advantage of the slight handling advantages the present EVO's have against the present STi's. Arguing is futile over which car is best...... lets face it they are both 2 of the best A to B cars currently available full stop.

Regards,
Shaun.

For those in a UK Turbo Classic Impreza or a UK WRX Bugeye/Blobeye, there is no such thing as an "equivalent EVO", which invlaidates the question for most of the people here. A new WRX is - I believe - cheaper softer etc than any new EVO. A standard EVO VIII is more "hardcore" and faster than a standard WRX, and probably marginally more "hardcore" and faster than an STi. However, put either on a dry twisty road against say a Caterham R400, and tell me which is the faster and more "hardcore" drivers car.

My brother's Fisher Fury Zetec (cost about £9k to build IIRC), at <550kg and ~180bhp would also merrily slaughter standard EVO or STi around a track etc when driven properly (probably meaning by someone better than me!), and is a lot more "hardcore" drivers car than any heavy 4 door saloon.

My point is that the two cars are in a very similar place on a spectrum of cars that runs from Toyota Prius to Radical SR3 Turbo. (I'll accept alternative nominations for either end of the spectrum). The difference in performance between a UK STi PPP and an MR300 will be much less than the difference between 2 drivers in most cases.

I think if you're going to compare apples with apples, you can only compare the EVO8 260 (still a great car, a facelifted 7) to the UK cars. Up until the MY05 UK sti, all the cars have been dumbed down, even the P1 losing it's DCCD, and a few niceties. All of the MR cars are reworked outside the factory, (pipe kits, exhaust, unichip) whereas the Spec C comes like it from the factory. The biggest difference in terms of laptimes will come from the UK cars losing the RE070 tyres, which are close in grip levels to the Yoko A046 which come on the EVO, and only available from Japan.

Certainly the modern Jap scoobies are a match for the EVOs, and now I think you will see the UK cars coming a lot closer, UK tyres aside.

That is actually untrue it is an Evo 8 which just happens to have a 5 speed box and a 'few' other downgraded components.

I am in actual fact a champion truth teller, and I tell you it's true.

I am not suggesting it comes in as a 7 and some puts an evo 8 body kit on it!?!

What are you suggesting then???

It is an Evo VIII chassis and bodyshell fully homologated to meet Euro approval so I would say that it is an Evo VIII wouldnt you ?

I'd quit while you're not too far behind on this one...Pavlo's right. Under the skin it's a 7, if you want to upgrade the ecu, etc, you have to use parts originally designed to upgrade the 7. The 8 bits won't work, cos it has a different loom etc. The 260 just happens to have an 8 front b/bar, wheels, etc. Cheap way of launching an entry level '8', and nothing wrong with that.
I have an Evo8 and a mildly modified MY00 classic, circa 270 brake.....love the Subaru, but it's going. I drove an 8 to " get it out of my system ". Bought the car, absolutely no regrets so far.

You talk a lot of sense my friend !!
I'm looking on this discussion from the outside (in Japan) with a grin on my face.
The most recent Japanese magazine tests have the cars too close to call or even falling in favour of the STi.
When comparing apples with apples i.e. STi spec C and Evo V111 MR it was no contest, STi won 5 of 6 tests, including track, in Cartop magazine.
I have an 04 STi but I'd only want the EVO V111 if it was better and, in Japan at least, it aint.

Easy one for me, I could only afford a 93-94, and lets face it, the original GSR was not exactly a looker!
