My technique is:
1) Drive to work
2) Phone the valet chap in the basement car park of Building 1 and check he's in today
3) Walk over to Building 1, pay him £10, give him keys, tell him where car is hidden today
4) Pick up keys from Security later in the day
5) Drive home
He looks after loads of top-end motors, many the pride and joy of their owners (we are all in IT, after all
). He knows not to even risk scratching the paint - and he does a superb job Top bloke! Well worth the increment over your supermarket morons with dirty cold water and grit-laden sponges.

as in push water about for an hour rather than soak it up 
Do you still get water trapped in door handles and on the door mirrors with the flash carwash or does it help prevent this?
Seriously, if you've never tried drying a car with a microfiber then give it a go. Halfords sell packs of three, one really fine which I use on interior glass, a medium one I use for wax/polish removal and a third one with longer fibers I use for drying. The hardest part of washing a car, for me, was always getting it dry, now it is the easiest part.

...except the Scoobs only been cleaned once in 6 months of ownership - and I didn't even do it. The wife's nephew did it!

God! Some people are really **** about their car washing aren't they!
This is my procedure;
1. Jet wash at garage thoroughly, DON'T use their bush!
2. Wash car with soft bush (Halfords) and Auto Glym.
3. Remove stuborn dirt on wheels with stiff brush.
3. Rinse off.
4. Dry with clean chamois.
5. Clean the chamois.
6. Don't inspect car for swirls as it will be dirty again in two days!
This is my procedure;
