The award is 'For valour'. I think this guy has valour, so he deserves it. McArthur certainly does too, but the two 'achievements' are not comparable
The only comparison intended was that they have both achieved things and had their achievements derided by people for whom running a bath is the only form of regular exercise......

How do you know that?

I'm not saying you're wrong in a lot of cases, but many people do amazing things and either never get any recognition for it, or don't like to boast about their achievements....

The area that his unit (PWRR plus the supporting arms, tanks etc) operated in, Al-Amarah, saw more contacts (fighting) and used more ammunition, tank rounds and mortars than any unit since the Korean Campaign in the 50's. Full scale battles were going on nearly everyday. There were a large number casualties. he is not the only one to get a well deserved gong. Nothing was in the press for weeks. Why? Something to do with the Olympics and the run up to the American elections.
See it, done it.

Fair point - but in my experience, people who've really achieved something, in whatever field, rarely knock others who've achieved things because they know what it takes. It's the armchair critics who usually have the most to say - and SN has more than it's fair share.......

That's the first bit of common sense I've heard on hear for a long time

SN is full of people who'll knock anything they've never tried or just can't @rsed doing .... it's what the Internet is full of

It really is difficult to understand why as soon as someone makes a real achievement, in whatever you care to mention, there are always those who feel they have to search for a way to denigrate what the person concerned has done.

Why for goodness sake can't you accept the achievement without all this carping to try and demonstrate reasons why it might not have been deserved.

Is it really so difficult to admit that someone may have actually done something way out of the ordinary and produced an honest above average performance? Is it some kind of inbuilt jealousy which drives you to run his efforts down?

In this man's case he well deserves the VC and you should be ashamed to question it in any way!

Actually I was just answering the original question, asking if it was deserved. If he actually did the things in the report then yes it was well deserved and worthy of recognition, (I did say that earlier in the thread). In the case of a vc, then this is especially the case as it represents true courage and bravery etc...

What narks me is the way that awards for true achievement get mixed in with the other awards given out. A knighthood for sweeping the street anyone?

However there will always be people who question this achievement. Especially when it's coming up to an election, they need some good war stories to divert public attention away from current issues etc. So, this does plant the thought that this might all be propaganda planted by the government. It wouldn't be first time, and I doubt it would be the last either. The only people who will ever know for sure are the people who were actually there....

If the Messiah returned (assuming he was here in the 1st place) and posted on here, he'd still get shot down in flames

Sadly, because he is F & C he is not entitled to the same leave rights or Visa status as a UK passport holder. Even if his children are born here they don't count. Well done the Foreign Orifice!!!!

What evidence has brought you to this conclusion? The Discovery channel?

According to a program on the UKTV History channel last week, Elite Fighting Forces, Her Majesty's 3rd Foot & Mouth (The Devils in Skirts) are the meanest hombres around

mate i didnt know about the children being born here dont count bitm thats sad really, i was sick when the gurkhas got treated badly, they gave their lives for this country and our government rather give visas to gangsters from eastern europe and pimps and dodgy asylum seekers than these people who give their life for britain, that made me real sick

lol @ gsm and filter socks

bros if life was different it would have been a blessing to be a s.a.s. soldier, their samurai's and mujahids all rolled into one, my heros

our army give or take a few w@nkers and yobs never mind then but our army as a whole are the best in the world and the pride of our country, i swear nothing like it, our armies are a living example of what others should be like and the s.a.s are the top men

these guys go through hell and man their awesome

and i luv the s.a.s symbol

WHO DARES WINS

man so beautiful

u ever notice the muslim youth luv dressing in black combats and specially inthe middle east poor ghettos in palestine and chechyna, fatah themselves similiar dress code and hezbollah martyrs youth

s.a.s are cool they wont blow themselves up and waste their life for some scumbag leader who wont send his own kids but will pick on poor families and brainwash someone to kill themselves

s.a.s will live another day so he can take out more enemies with his bullets and live every moment to fight and take out the enemy, whats the point blowing yourself up and causing pain to your family and mother who brought u up all her life and had dreams

Well done I say!! I'ts about time real achievement was recognised with real reward. Why should all these sports persons get CBE's, OBE's, etc etc. for doing absolutely nothing of real importance to anyone other than themselves?
