This thread shows that what the politicians call the "democratic deficit" is alive and well.
What they really mean and, of course can't acknowledge, is that the current political system cannot meet or solve the challenges that we, in this "post industrial" society face.
The politicians short term outlook, most exemplified, as others have said, with regard to energy generation both for transport and other needs is what ensures that this society will slowly decline as those in the East rise.
Where are the visionary politicians who will meet this challenge?

It wont happen, the people want short term fixes too, they don't know what goes on behind the scenes. If it's not fixed in 5 years you get voted out, so a quick shoddy job is done.
Though my gripe with Labour is more to do with things that *can* be fixed short term, such as their increasingly oppressive legislation (RIP act, the new terrorism bill, the old terrorism bill etc. etc.) and the fact that they have set *targets* to the speed camera bunch.
Labour did do one sweetener for motorists though, some of you may have been offered to attend a speed awareness course instead of getting points. This was pushed through at the last minute and kept quiet in the hope that the think of the children brigade don't get wind of it, in an attempt to get both groups on their side. It makes me sick frankly. I hated Thatcher and everything she stood for, but compared to this bunch she was the epitome of honesty. "please bend over while I attach this strap-on" vs "hey, look at that pretty picture behind you *stab*"
