Personally, I'd stick with the 02 STi, the differences between your existing car and a WR1 are not worth another £13K IMHO. A simple ECUTEK remap and panel filter from a reputable dealer or even a Subaru backed PPP will realise nigh on all the power of the WR1 in your existing car and will be a hell of a lot cheaper

The point is, I wouldn't go for the trade in you're being offered - hang on to what you've got, you've already stomached the depreciation and the £13k will be much better invested (or paying off mortgage) IMO.

I would say all the cars will be an improvement on your car.
I changed from an 02STI to a WR1 as the deal to change was hard to resist...a bit of a no-brainer really.
I need a proper warranty which is why I resisted an import as good as they are!!.
Very happy with my WR1.
Deceavingly quick I would say.(Cant spell....spell check anyone??)
Going to change the suspension when funds allow and need to get my brakes functioning a little better. Got pad pick up whatever that is and they drone and dont work very well at the moment.
I like the fact that it is different to the norm and everyone I know prefers the car to all the other SDubaru`s they see about.
Nice to have a car with the center diff as well but you may not make the most of it depends how you drive??
You will find the car turns in a lot better than your 02 car and drifts about a little more!!!

PS I got £17100 for my car last August in part ex so about £13K to change.

I really cannot see how a WR1 is worth the extra 12.5k over your STi. I mean in real world driving, I can't see the power hike would make a significant difference ?

By all means buy the WR1 if you want one and £12.5k is just a drop in the ocean compared to your income and so the 12.5k is neither here or there.

I can't help thinking that if you are trying to rationally justify purchasing it then may be you shouldn't! Sorry this may be sounding like a harsh opinion and its really not intended to be!

I've been there and believe me the looks and air cooled tradition of the 993 never quite outweighed the need to get the steering geometry checked and re-aligned every other week, the servicing bills and intervals kind of detracted from the ownership experience as well, oh and the driving position was never that great. The 996 is a flawed beast, granted, but a far better package all around and cheaper in the short medium and long term.

Downside of the 996 is depreciation, its a nightmare, however now is a good time to buy what with the 997 now on the street, 993's still command good money, in fact quite often more than the water cooled younger fresher 996.

Interesting to hear from an owner on the 993, I'm sure I am looking at the whole thing with rose tinted glasses!

I have been told that its the 964 that is the expensive one to service and that the 996 is a real step down in build quality? Surely when you factor in that the 993's are ear marked for a future classic and don't seem to depreciate there still worth a look?

964's are pretty good on build, avoid the C4, the transfer boxes were and still are notorious. Agricultural interior but very hard wearing.

993 is destined for classic status, but classics need caring for and the 993 panders for attention at all times. It is the best looking of all the 911's IMHO especially the Turbo 4 and the C4S.

Early 996 poor build, probably worse than early E36 BMW, spot an early 996 by orange indicators and a few other subtle touches. The upside is servicing costs and intervals were great improvements on the 993. Suspension a huge improvement as well over the 993. Avoid anything in Speed Yellow and Rainforest Green no matter what the spec or price. 996 will never be a classic, ever.

Try Autobahn or Northway for great advice and great cars as well.

If you do ever buy always buy with a warranty whether OPC or not, it WILL at some point be worth its weight in pure gold.

If you tried the WR1, like it and can afford it then why not?

marky2 has said he doesnt want to modify a car which I understand as it was part of the logic in my WR1 buying process. Even if you do buy a new STi and put a PPP on the WR1 has marginally more power and you also need to add Prodrive suspension and wheels to get a similar package to the WR1. Dont forget it also comes with RAC Trackstar as standard...
At the end of the day the WR1 will also be much cheaper to insure as it is not modified, I am paying more than £300 a year less than for my 98MY Turbo with PPP, P1 Wheels, Eiback suspension etc.,..

At the end of the day I needed to cut down the amount of time I spend away from the office getting cars fixed/sorted/serviced and the WR1 has helped A LOT with this compared to my previous Scoob (my Classic Cars take up enough time without my daily driver demanding extra attention - and I imagine this could be relevant when considering an old 911, it certainly is with my Italian 'mistress' though of course all that is forgotten when the quad-cam V8 errupts into life.... anyway I digress).

As for the colour, well I like it which is frankly all that matters as it is MY car, though I have to say I have had nothing but complimentary comments on the colour from those who do come up and talk about the car and I also like the overall look with Speedline wheels etc.,..

Driving wise it is not as raw as my 98MY Scoob, but overall I wouldn't go back, I enjoy the handling and the effect of the centre diff and lets not forget that if we are talking about a daily driver the ride quality is staggeringly good for the type of car.

Well that is my two penneths worth...

Large kite being flown in vicinity beware!

Too many good cars around for similar or less money and most with a warranty as well, got £30 to blow on a Porker? Get a 3.2 Boxster S, ubiquitous for a reason they're damn good and even in average hands will out pace a 911 as most 911 drivers wouldnt know a power slide from a power saw.

Arrrgghhhhhh, but a 911 still turns more heads, and looks the part more than a Boxster IMO, and most other motor mad people! IF i see a Boxster, i wouldnt look twice, but a 911 always gets a second glance, especially a nice looking one. Sort of like the 944 or 928. Great cars, but without the looks (again IMO)

hi marky if you dont like to mod motors the wr1 320 bhp probably with a warrenty is the best you can get without going for a jap import there is nothing wrong with that i own a sti type r. i got to drive a wr1 on track i think its the first scooby i would consider since buying my type r

its got to be wr1 or spec c

or save a few grand and just remap you own sti an a few other mods and you'll soon have something as powerful

Quite right but for £30k theres better out there than a 98 phase 1 996. You've got good taste LIDDO, a man of your calibre would suit a 968 Club Sport! Porsche's finest front engined car ever, practical every day car and a great track day car for hooning around the place in. You know it makes sense!
