I suppose one of the problems is, that there really aren't any other places in that area of the UK in which to ski apart from the sea, which can be a problem - the problem being, that those who are used to boating on the lake only, are perhaps less aware of tides, currents etc etc, and when they **** it up, put people at risk who have to go out and rescue them.
I don't mean to use stereotypes (well I do really...., but having met a fair few jetskiers, I'd say that the vast majority aren't the type who'd go on a course and learn the safety aspects of where and where not to go, what to do when it breakes down and so on. More likely to go out into the middle of the Mersey estuary, run out of fuel, then phone someone on their mobile to come and get them. Then complain coz the towrope made a mark on their machine.....
I'm all in favour of the countryside, and enjoy it very much as it is with or without powerboats. The fact is, if you don't like 'em, you could always go somewhere else.
Difficult for me to comment on it though tbh, as I like the Lake District, and I also like fast boats, and the racing heritage that goes with those lakes. Not always at the same time mind you, but it's hard to know where else they're supposed to go.

That said, I don't really care, as I'm happy on the sea, and I don't have a powerboat anyway

I've got a boat at Loch Lomond and it looks like they could be thinking of putting a limit there now in case they all come up from Lake Windermere

I do hope they don't or at least only limit a percentage of the Loch or it'll kind of defeat the purpose of having the boat!

Unfortunately, it won't stop there. These rulings tend to flow a path of destruction into other recreational areas. Take for example some of the race circuits having to enforce ridiculously low noise limits - something closer to our hearts?

But probably not ridiculously low if you live half a mile from the circuit and can't sit in your garden on a sunny afternoon without listening to the din!
On Windermere, two jetskis could effectively ruin the Lake for everyone within a mile radius. Good riddance!

There were powerboats yes but not in the numbers there are (were ) now and no there weren't any jetskis.

I assume you knew there would be noise when you bought the house then?

I see where you are coming from with the noise but still think the restriction is rather harsh....noise restrictions would perhaps be more suitable....there is a lot more noise (and accidents!) on the road than the lake and if the same situation was applied to the public highways there would be an almighty uproar by 99% of people i would imagine

FWIW my boat only puts out 82 db at full throttle @ 45mph, a lot less than most scoobies

It's not my house mate, I rent it. There's no way I could afford to buy a house within 20 miles of Windermere due to the number of second home owners driving prices beyond the reach of normal people (don't get me started on that one ).
I agree there probably was room for a compromise, my own favorite would be time limits for powerboating etc say between 10am and 5pm no speed limit, outside those times a blanket 10mph. The problem is the power boat fraternity weren't in the least bit interesed in a compromise until they lost the public enquiry and only then started talking about noise limits and compulsory training etc. IMO if they had come up with an action plan before the public enquiry it might have diffused the whole situation.

You're right there is a lot of noise on the roads and now that the power boats have gone the noise of the main road along the shore is more noticable. The difference is that the people on the road are all going somewhere not round and round the same 2 square miles just for fun.

Can't see whats wrong in going round the same 2 square miles for fun myself. Rather like racing cars doing a similar thing round tracks. I used to really enjoy that, and so did the spectators.

We really are entering a world where we will not be permitted to do anything which might be actually enjoyable in case the loonies get upset because they are not capable of doing something like it themselves, so they feel that they have to spoil the fun!

Fogies who can't keep up should mind their own business instead of being killjoys.

And why i don't want to have to move the boat - a more tranqil scene (yes, powerboat owners can be sensible as well ) The sea just doesn't have anywhere near the same appeal IMHO


Out of curiosity, any Windermere users on here going to relocate to loch Lomond this year?
