Did 6 trips with Virgin to the states last year and I actually enjoyed the flights! I personally fly premium out and upper class return for a better sleep.

Booked through Virgins website as it was cheaper, and got upgrades via phone afterwards.

I won't tell you the story of how the Air India Jumbo's used to brush the trees at the end of the Heathrow runway then?

I worked for BAA a few years ago and was based ay Heathrow. Apparantly, they were so heavy (especially during relgious festivals, when they were packed), the Air India 747s used to take the whole length of the Heathrow runway to take off and on more than one occassion, they caught the tops of trees as they climbed. Heathrow was forced to cut them down

Never flown them so can't comment on their quality as an airline, just a good story

IIRC did'nt an Air India jumbo crash on take off due to being grossly overloaded a coupla years ago....? That hit a fuel storage depot on the end of the runway

Make sure you're distinguishing between Air India and Indian Airlines - they're different (Air India generally run the big international routes whereas Indian Airlines do mainly internal flights).
Indian Airlines are truly shocking - basically flying buses. Their planes are old and poorly maintained and unlikely to be allowed to fly to/from LHR.
