I have to agree that some of the drivers of large 4x4's do seem to drive with less consideration to others almost as if they do feel more important and also that they feel that evryone else should give way to them.

My biggest criticism however is that they take up so much room in a small town such as where I live and where the parking is very constricted. Just seems a bit selfish to me.

If I was going to be hit by anyone, I would certainly prefer something of a more reasonable size!

Hi Les, hope you're doing well

The problem with this statement is that unfortunately it's not often true.

For example, an X5 is of similar length and width to a normal 5 series BMW, it's just taller. In fact SWB 4x4's are considerably shorter than many "normal" cars. There's only a handful of 4x4's that are genuinely bigger (length x width) than a large saloon and even then it's not by much (Hummer's excluded)

Thing is, a lot of these 4x4's are driven by women that would have had a Golf or suchlike otherwise, NOT a 5 series.

Personally, I think people can drive what they like, however they must be responsible with it. The problem with 4x4's and MPV's is they're so tall. With a 'normal' car, you can see 'through' them (i.e. through their rear window) to see traffic ahead but you can't do this with tall cars like this.

In addition, and this is my gripe with many 4x4 drivers, many of them don't see you if you're in a small or low car. Lorry and van drivers get (or should get) trained to respect the fact that they have restricted low/rear visibility. Most 4x4 mums just jump in and try to drive them like a golf. I was in a traffic jam in my westie once and a woman in a sharan/galaxy thing pulling out from a side road was going to go straight into the side of me. I, and the guy behind her were peeping our horns, but she kept going. I unstrapped my belt and stood up in the car then she saw me with a look of horror. thankfully she stopped inches away. If she'd been paying more attention on her approach to the junction she would have seen me. She would have also seen me if she was in any kind of normal car that didn't obscure her low ground visibility.

In a Westie!!! LOL - people on push-bikes don't see people in Westies!

The point about seemingly arrogant drivers in large 4x4's is a good one.

I notice that they always seem to go faster than they should do in narrow constricted areas, expect everyone to get out of their way, and accelerate away from a standstill unnecessarily and dangerously fast in the towns in areas of heavy traffic.

The woman drivers are worse then the men at that sort of behaviour too.
