I think people do expect more from this country these days (as per the title of thread). I think allot of people pay a whole lot of tax for many years and get next to nothing back from it. Then when something like rover goes down, the workers expect the government to sort it. Because after all, if the government isn't there to sort people out then, why do you pay so much money to them??

I see where you are coming from. Personally I'd rather pay less to the government, have them less involved in my day to day life and take responsibility for many of the things that affect me - oh, I do that already, just need to get the government to butt out now

totally agree with you Olly, so would I. I'd rather that we all just paid for our own stuff and gave the government nothing. Mind you then the country would be run by insurance companies!

You might argue that they have quite an influence anyway

As a ZT owner, I do lurke on that website and have been totally embarassed with the posts.
One particular one is to encourage memebers to buy a new Rover to keep the co. afloat LOL

Our ZT interestingly finishes its lease this month so I have the option to buy it. £10 should do it?
Its a great drive and has just as many warranty claims as my scoob has had.

The ZT & 75 is generally considered a good (BMW) car and the roadster (despite having many failings) has somehow been the UK best sport car seller.
From my personal experience, the other cars/ dealers and dealing with the hierarcy of MG Rover makes me think they are still working for BL in the 1970's.
The interview with the family at the start of the thread also seems to suggest that there may be a 70's socialist outlook at Longbridge.

I see now they're marching on Downing Street to try to get more money.

Not bad if every private enterprise that went under could do that, hey?

I'm sorry but if I'd been working at Rover when it first went tit's up I'd have been making sure I'd have been putting some aside "just in case"

I am amazed at the suggestion that the £6 Million is in an effort to buy votes until after the election!

Labour have been culpable in allowing the current situation to happen by interfering in the deal 5 yrs ago - as said above, if they'd let Moulton (Alchemy) buy the business they'd have downsized and created a real viable business from what's in there. The thing has been a dead dog since the JV with Honda fell apart (the BAE sale) - no way it was ever going to fund the £billions required to develop new models. Labour should not interfere - leave well alone, and stop being a nanny state.

Do the workers expect too much? I think they've been treated unfairly as they'd have got better pay-offs and a more gradual process under the Alchemy deal. Understandably they're pissed off but it's not the government's responsibility to ensure every large business in the country is well managed.

Good on the Towers 4 IMO - noone else was allowed to buy it, yes they've trousered £40m+ but they've just re-committed that to the business. Let's face it, £40m is a drop in the ocean for this lumbering behemoth - if they hadn't taken it out, it would merely have delayed the inevitable by a couple of months. I would be interested in whether they should be investigated for wrongful trading, however. Why haven't they been cutting costs before now?
