You're right, though. You would notice trouble with running if it was grumbling. Change it at the first signs. Mine was on its way out at 70k.

Yes, lean is weak, surely that would be noticeable BEFORE the engine destroys itself??
Anyway, these MAF failures are closely accompanied by some Induction Kit or some such Mod.
There are 1,000's of standard cars running around with no trouble whatsoever with their MAFs ................... 48,000 members on here, about 40,000 have modified cars? 20 or 30 had MAF failures?
I'm not saying I shouldn't change it should I notice some idle problems ..... but, forgive me if I don't throw £70 chasing a scare story![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

yes but, as far as i understand it, its only the maf failure that can cause catastrophic damage and as said it can be impossible to spot its going wrong.........although 98 cars are the worst i believe. All assuming the car has all the right fluids/levels and the cambelt changed......

At 57,500miles she is smoother and more powerful than ever, the mpg is now around 28-32mpg, it just seems to get better and better - I've owned it since new and the careful treatment its had is paying BIG dividends!

Glad I've serviced my MY93 WRX (with gold wheels) myself since importing it ......doubt I've spent much more than £2000 on servicing in 5 years (oil, brakes, wear & tear etc). Only needed to take it to the dealer for cam belt change.
140,000 miles and still going strong!

A Subaru isn't much more complicated than other cars, indeed, its heavily engineered to last (the farmers wouldn't use them if they weren't built like tractors)

Still on the original clutch as far as i know as well but only 63k done and quite a few 1/4 mile starts, so not bad at all.
Pete! has your car really done 57500 miles for a 99/2000 my? thats quite high mileage is'nt it? if I were you i would take out the warranty!

The best way to tell if the MAF is dying is to do an ECU reset, if it then idles roughly the MAF is definately dead, at which point you need to drive it off boost untill the new MAF is installed.
I am not saying your MAF is dead Pete, i am saying on the MY99/00 it's a sensible precaution to swap them out at 50K miles because they do deteriorate, even with the stock panel filter, it's a well known problem. Ask the EcuTek remapers how many new MAF's they swap out at the start of the mapping process due to low performing sensor outputs and you will be amazed at the reply.
It's the same issue other cars have with these early hot film sensors, VW have issues too but the diference there is they are not turbo engines so the damage is far less likely to occur, they just run less eficiently.
Anyway, i am sounding like a broken record, stick with the old MAF if you like, i am just trying to save you a few grand when your waranty lapses.

When I had my (standard) UK MY99 the MAF failed at 39,000 miles, fortunately not doing any damage though it was under warranty anyway.
When I bought my MY99 Type R I changed the MAF as a precaution, it had done 41,000 miles and was on the original MAF so IMO it wasn't worth the risk (no warranty). They only cost £78 to relace and it's easy to change, well worth it for peace of mind - after all it's cheaper than an oil change at main dealer prices.

Pete - mine's an MY99.
Since the purchaset, it went through 3 MAFs. On the 99/00 they are the achillies (sp?) heal of the car. I don't have an induction kit.
In fact the 1st MAF was dying - it gave BLISTERING performance whilst on my test drive. The (official) Subaru dealer commented on how quick it was.
Just as I was about to pick the car up, the piston let go. New engine thankyou Subaru![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
They changed the MAF, then I noticed about 2 weeks later that the idle was rubbish - it would stall at junctions etc. New MAF, everything sorted.
My last MAF went, when at service, they changed the air filter (standard Subaru panel filter) and damaged the MAF with some cr@p from the dirty filter!!!!
I only noticed when the performance did the opposite to before, also, NO stalling. This time the car would judder over 3000 revs!!!

So what I'm getting at is that the MAF failure/failing scenario lends itself to a wide range of symptoms. But 9/10 times, MY99/00 problems are MAFs. For the sake of £78, it is piece of mind, especially when you bear in mind the potential consequences!!!

£75 for peace of mind is a small price to pay if you ask me. I won't be renewing the warranty on mine, another MY00 approaching 60k miles. I have fitted a new MAF though, felt an immediate difference so the old one was obviously dying. And no induction kit / oiled filter etc. before you ask, standard airbox and dealer fitted panel filter.
