What I'm saying is that the MY99/00 MAF isn't very strong (as others have also said)
With the potential damage that can be caused, surely for the sake of an additional £80 (bearing in mind you're now getting the car serviced by a 3rd party ie cheaper concern), your giving your car every chance to providing you with many miles of hassle-free motoring...
The direction of the topic seemed to be focussing in on particular faults (hence my post). My point being that the MAF symptoms are SO varied that it's always best as a precaution to change it anyway.

Annually??
If its a common fault I assume that Subaru have improved the design - so, would the new one be perfect?

Bosche have changed the design Pete, some of the early replacement MAF's would fail in a few weeks sometimes, but the later replacements apear to be much better and dont have the early failure issue, they just wear out like the original one does.
Replacement should be based on miles covered rather than age, i would swap it at the major service intervals at 45K miles etc.
If you run an induction kit or oiled filter you need to change them more often.

I personally change mine every other service - annually
Don't panic about this - it's not the be all and end all. It's moreso an awareness of the device and it's failings!
MOST faults with this Model Year were based around the MAF - which does make it a 1st port of call when fault finding
Think of this known quantity as a good thing
