this is true if you wish to make no profit... If Tesco chose to sell Levi's at just above cost price then that will get people into their store.. However every high street shop can't compete with that because everybody needs to make a profit somewhere...

So obviously its great for tesco's business, but we are running into the American WalMart era of our lives

On hearing they made £2bn it does sound outrageous but when on TV last night they said it's only 4% on sales it is not a big amount.

At that rate of return they are on a knife edge of falling into a loss making situation but obviously due to good management and controls they deserve it.

If we had a government in power that could buy and be as efficient in their spending etc then I think we would all be happy

If he gets his cabbages ready to sell to Tescos in a certain week in the future, and come that week Tescos decide on a BOGOF for cabbages, then Tescos require him to sell them his cabbages at half price

If that is true, then that really is sharp management and of course not illegal, but no way to run a sustainable business - if they p$ss off all their suppliers they'll have nothing to sell

PS having some lengthy time off work at the moment, I'm doing a lot of the household shopping, mostly at the local Tescos. However, their fruit&veg are desperately overpriced - avocados in Tesco at 72p, just as good ones in the local greengrocer 200 yds down the road at five for 50p. Honest.

The thing is, Martin, if that supplier doesn't want to sell at the price Tescos demand, there are many more behind him who would be happy to jump into his shoes. At the end of the day it's just market forces determining supply and demand, but it doesn't address the issues of whether this is actually fair or desireable...

I have no idea whether Tesco are using child labour in Taiwan - but I do know that they seriously screw over all their suppliers in order to be able to sell stuff so cheap. There are other large supermarkets (Sainsburys) out there who operate far more eithcally.

They're really not making their money on th £4 jeans They lure you in with the promise of their 'Price Checks' and then make their money on the none 'price checked' items. If all anyone bought was thier jeans then they'd soon be out of business.

Money or ethics - depends on your priorities really and this life is all about freedom of choice. Good luck to you if you've made money out of them. Personally I avoid them wherever I can.

As a former Tesco employee and someone who currently works for a major supplier (in fact the second major supplier to Tesco I've worked for) I can categorically state that your insinuation that Tesco operates unethically towards its suppliers is unfounded and, indeed, crap.

This is typical of the sort of response peddled by those who speculate based on rumour and second-hand experiences.

Yes, Tesco negotiates hard and expects a good deal (not just on price but availability, own-label innovation etc), but so do ALL the other big retailers. This is just sound business practice.

The reality is that suppliers frequently benefit from big volumes and, although gross margins may not be enormous, an efficient manufacturer will still make a reasonable living.

Ultimately all suppliers have the option to walk away & deal with other customers.

Having also worked in the trade, I can categorically state that Tesco dictate to certain suppliers, the price that they (the suppliers) are to sell their product to Tesco’s. There is no negotiation.



There are four or five big “Dairies” in the UK, Arla and Robert Wiseman being two of them, supplying mainly milk and other associated products. Tesco certainly used to tell them what the price would be for the products. They in turn told the farmers how much they are prepared to pay for their product.



The big supermarkets have been screwing the UK farming industry for years.





How much profit is too much profit? Or is their no limit? BP, Shell, Barclays, Llloyds etc. We all buy some of their products? Are we being royally screwed over? Or paying a fair price?
