An Engineer explains to the Technician what he wants, the Technician converts that into practicality.
The Technician would be able to advise the Engineer how an engine should be maintained - the Engineer takes that info and decides for himself whether it actually makes sense to do it that way ......... sometimes its an old wives tale, like the **** Oil Change Procedure, and I have a duty to inform those that haven't a clue either way what they should know!
I am the clear mind amongst a lot of smoke screens ... plenty have their own reasons for mystifying the Boxer Engine ... as an Engineer its a simple engine to understand and I can explain what happens when and how - but, I am always open to what the Technicians and Craftsmen have to say ...... but when its not backed up with hard facts ( just 'feelings' ) then I question it.

real engineers get there hands dirty, thats why they understand problems and come up with solutions.
its also why most government backed or led projects take so long
to many chiefs, and not enough indians..

I am a Design Engineer ......... I cannot go into any more details or I will have the security forces on my case!
The security forces and most of scoobynet on your case? You would not cope with the both
I have got to admit that from the posts you have replied to you sound like the most **** and **** HOLE of a bloke going with your views in general, You have got to admit you dont take any prisoners but I have got to admit that you have some really strong points that you have put across on this subject and in a way admire you for that!(A scoobynet first) Even though you have made some great points I will still go for the **** oil change etc as I know some of the experts quite well now and trust in what they say. I personally think it cuts down the risks of things going wrong! I maybe wrong! But at the end of the day, why? do we still get very regular posts every day "MY BIG ENDS HAVE GONE" when you get regular people with no mods at all saying their engine has "GONE" that is what i dont get! if these engines go bust! its 90% of the time the bearings no matter if its a jdm running on 95 ron, a jdm running super boost and full de-cat, a standard classic sti running on optimax and octane booster or even a standard uk turbo! they all do the same! Why?

The members of this board represent a tiny, tiny number compared to those across the world who own and drive Subarus with the Boxer Engine AND less than 5% on here have had Engines blow up!! And then its mainly due to mods!!
So, taking the above into consideration, I would estimate that the total % of Engine failures on the Boxer Engine to be LESS than 0.5%!! Yes LESS than 0.5% - hardly earth shattering news and nothing to make you do the **** Oil Change ..... you have allowed a few skewed Engine Failures turn you into a jibbering quirking wreck!

Because THEY ARE the experts in this field, they have spent £BILLIONS researching and developing these Engines. Strangely they do not recommend the **** Oil Change (although to do so would allow their dealers to charge even MORE!) .... what do the EXPERTS recommend then? Just change the oil, don't even fill the filter, start the car ( To do otherwise is ignoring the advice from the only experts that matter, but carry on if it makes you feel better!) - remember not to walk on any cracks in the pavement whilst getting into the drivers seat after disconnecting the CamSensor
I cannot imagine that you are talking about Tiny Tim the 'Expert' at Tiny Tims Motors, trading out of Unit 2, GasWorks Alley, Cleehorpes?? ........... Yes, they can fix these engines, they see failures and can gauge a pattern, they are keen enthusiasts, they are also interested in the contents of your wallet!

Lets face it Pete, mechanics get paid **** money unless they own the garage, so anything to cut corners is a plus. If that means not even bothering your **** to fill the oil filter they will do it. I know ive been there, seen it and been told to hurry up before = cut corners!

Great, it's even better than I imagined, he can't see what I say about him 'cos of his ignore list, but he can't help but reply 'cos everyone else tells him what I've said. What a fantastic system!
Jesus, he's an idiot, especially if he thinks I'd waste my hard earned hatred on him. Somebody tell him!
No-one needs to consider themselves **** for following the long-winded oil change procedure, and here's why. If you don't do it, and your engine blows up, you'll always wonder if taking longer over it would've helped. Take into account that removing the crank sensor and turning the engine over to move the oil around and build up some pressure adds about 2 mins to the overall time it takes to change your oil....why wouldn't you do it? It may not help, but then again it might, and it certainly isn't harming anything. For the extra time it takes I don't believe anyone can post a reason why it doesn't make sense.
If anyone from the upper echelons of Subaru employment would like to come on here and tell us why us 'analists' are wasting our time in a manner that makes things crystal clear, and leaves no room for discussion or argument, that'd suit me fine. The fact that this forum has been going as long as it has and that hasn't happened yet should help everyone to make up their own minds.
At the end of the day, regardless of the relevance ( or otherwise ) of this thread, it's your decision, cos it's you that'll be footing the bill if it's the wrong one.

Subaru use, as I guess many others do, the Apprentice to do the Servicing work ................. I have never had the courage to ask for a reduction in the hourly rate, but I always want to!!
If Subaru state that the Oil Filter doesn't have to be filled and the Engine can be started straight away .............. then thats how my car has been serviced for the past 5 years and 9 services, nothing has gone wrong.

NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!
New warning issued recently by the Geek Brigade!!!
Straight from the Sweaty, Real Ale Induced Think Tank, comes:- 'Intercooler Heat Sinking'
This amazing discovery re-writes the Subaru Designers Guides, it has been reported that this condition manifests itself in the following manner;-
An unknown driver of a Subaru Impreza was driving along the Motorway at approx. 120MPH for a period of 5 hours (he didn't realise he was in third gear all that time - but don't let facts get in the way of a good scare story )
He left the Motorway at a sliproad and stopped at the intersection - THEN the strange effect happened - the Intercooler started to become HOT ....
...... quite why this happens remains a mystery to the geeks (the rest of us suspect that after a long run EVERYTHING gets hot once you stop the vehicle) ......
Anyway, to cut to the chase ....... when you floor the throttle and scream away from the intersection, the engine redlines and the engine blows up ................ Nooooooooo?????????

What does it say about SN when a thread about Tesco petrol gets such a large following - yet informative threads like this are left to die??
