i ll read up the exact regulations on passengers in the testing manual tomorow pete, then let you know exactly whats what. but like i say ,it wouldnt be a problem with you being passenger . normally in the past at my garage weve allways done it alone. but to take the owner along wouldnt be a problem.
like i say ,i ll let you know the exact regulations tomorow. but whatever you choose mate, i hope it all goes well for you, pete.

Dunno whether Colin Minton does MoT's or not these days? Subaru specialist who frequents scoobynet. I suspect he would be no more excited about driving your car than you would driving a sport
He's in Cold Ash (just north of thatcham), which I think is your neck of the woods isn't it Pete?

Does he go by the name Colin Minton Motors or something?
I'm sure he wouldn't bat an eyelid at my standard wagon

Colin posts on scoobynet under the name "rally colin", if you do a search on this site you should be able pick up his mobile pretty easily.

Will keep them and Subaru4U in mind come future servicing and out of warranty work

Pete, playing to your obvious wind-up here, but do you really think the main dealer didn't thrash your car on road test? Bet they pissed themselves when they saw the built up quantities of soot billowing out the back of it.

He'll go back and ask for road test records from every service.

A few points:
1. I know I'm not supposed to do it, but my last 7 years of scoobs have all been tested on rolling roads with myself as the assistant, you can check far better for brake imbalance, handbrake operation, and the very rare chance that a corroded pipe will burst under the extreme pressure you can apply on these machines. Modern rolling roads turn at approx 4-5 mph max. I am an MOT TESTER, and never do the same on a customers car (unless it's a mate and i explain the pro's and con's). 7 years and about 150,000 miles, still no gearbox failure, start the urban myths now.
2. Got my recent review by the Ministry lately, and he assured me it was alright to test Mercedes ML jeeps on the rollers (book says tapely meter, and I can't afford a Merc gearbox, I'll stick to the book)!!!
3.I've never seen a 4 wheel rolling road for testing brakes, but I have seen brake test plates, where the car is driven on at approx 4-5 mph several times and the different systems tested, why not find a garage with one of these fitted.
4. If you are that worried about your car, why are you upset about paying an extra £14 for a test at a reputable garage, it's less than a third of a tank of petrol. £1200 for a warranty, yes get upset, £14 extra for an MOT, get over it and dry your eyes.
Let the onslaught begin.

They bent the Calibra, they seem to be making excuses for not allowing you along and as you say a cpl of young guys (the 18yr old prob a Max Power subscriber) which make you feel uncomfortable. No matter what anyone says here you will not be happy about it. Just dont take it there.

Just got off the phone from VOSA ...... there is NO regulation or rule to say the owner cannot ride along.
This should be fun of Friday when I turn up
I think I just like confrontation ................ ??

What next, Pete? "I'm thinking of washing my turbo 2000 mats but I don't think any of the shampoos at Halfords are special enough". Are we going to be treated to every little detail in the saga of you looking after your car?

The chemical composition of these shampoos is such that they react with the mat base material and this sets in motion a chain reaction.
The fibres released into the cars interior get sucked into the vents by the negative induction air flow generated by the Impreza Bonnet Scoop.
This only applies to MY96 and MY97 when the Scoop was positioned 3mm lower than other MY's.
The effect of these fibres upon the windscreen wiper rubbers is to make them melt and break-up prematurely ......... these pieces then get sucked into the intercooler because of the reduced height of the Scoop.
The resultant Engine damage is severe, at least a full re-build ...... I will alert Jimbo at WhackyScoobieEngines - he will sort you out!

pete, had a good read through the mot testers manual. and unfortunatly mate, it is not very specific on the matter of passengers. it doesnt even actually say anything about having an assistant on the test withth you at all .so it doesnt say you can ,but it doesnt say you cant!!!!. great manual that was!!!!!.anyway, to cut a long story short, it all seems to be down to the discretion of the tester.but i would have no problem with you coming along as would the other tester at my garage. unfortunatly i cannot be of more help.... hope it all goes well for you , pete

I keep asking myself why they are unwilling to allow me along ... debating what tact I will take on Friday - either DEMAND that I go along and walk away if not allowed to, or just say OK and hope its treated well?
I may be concerned about nothing ...... but gut instincts say stay with the car! But, as has been said, I have left my car at the Main Dealers in the past without worrying.
I'll sleep on it - thanks Pete once again for your help (and everyone else!)

You're going to end up giving yourself a coronary worrying about all this....

They would quite like me to buy one as I would be the first!!
My Impreza has cost me in Depreciation and Servicing costs alone, £18500 over 5 years ................. more than £10 a DAY!!!!
I couldn't possibly justify doing that again ................ quite how you lot can buy Mods. and renew your cars regularly with a clear conscience amazes me

This centre does not charge me a penny if the car fails, I can simply walk away ..... so, its in their interests to try and pass it.
Then when they charge, its £28.
The deal is very good and its only the fact that the car will be out of my sight being driven maybe carefully, but maybe not!
I keep an eye on my other cars!

I'm proud of my car. I've looked after it well. It's worth a lot of money. Keeping it out of the hands of the sort of folks you'd expect to find in a bottom-end-of-the-market operation like you describe is worth a few quid more!
Bejaysus! You make the Yorkshire-Scotland Liaison Committee look like a benefactors convention!

I do all my own maintenance and nearly all my mods were bought 2nd hand off SNET.
I've never owned a new car in my life as I think the 1st owner depreciation is something I can live without..
There are horror stories on here about the Impreza but in my experience the Subaru is the most reliable car I've ever owned. A number of years ago I bought an L series estate (basically Impreza under the bodyshell) for £500. I serviced it when I bought it and never touched it again for 4 years (40k miles) - not even an oil change
You'd be surprised how easy it is to maintain them yourself - bear in mind the running gear has been around in more or less the same setup for 20 odd years and that it was originally a car designed for farmer type folks..
p.s. MOT this weekend but new rear discs to fit first
