You poor, poor man, I feel for you!

We had the same problem about 3 years ago, an old couple in the next house, (3 bed semi) both of them were a bit loopy, only peace we got was when they were in hospital.

They would argue through the night with their grown up son (looked a bit of a pedo with an eye patch! Scary!) The old bloke was deaf and his room backed onto mine, I woke up once at 2am and thought the house was under attack, it was the Grand Prix at about a million decibels!

We used to bang on the walls (my bedroom wall was covered in heel marks where I hit it with my shoes) Called the police, told the council, at first we used to go round and speak to them but it was so bloody hard, they were stone deaf and mental. The old bloke set fire to his house twice

The night before my driving test i'd had enough and slept on the dining room floor all I wanted was some sleep

The old bloke used to beat up his wife, the Son and the Mother got him sent to an old peoples home but he escaped and came back. He got sent to hospital and died not long after that. The old lady moved in with her daughter and I don't know what happened to Captain Birdseye (the son)

You'd think now we would get some peace, oh no, a single mother with 2 brats and a lot of friends who like to party!

Have you seen the Old bloke recently? He could be dead?!?

lol.. well last night was interesting

misses gets in bed last night at 10:15pm, she has the telly on everything is fine. I come to bed at 10:40pm, everything still fine. 10:50pm match of the day starts and I settle down. 5 minutes later hes banging on the wall and shouting "shut the f#*k up" LOL we look at each other thinging WTF. he turns his alarm clock on full belt. 5 minutes later when he turns it off I put the telly on mute. 5 mins later I take telly off mute and turn it down a bit (its not loud anyhow and my hearing is perfect) straight away his alarm goes off again. 5 minutes later he turns it off I put the telly on mute... anyhow we worked out that hes now doing it on purpose, in the end I had to watch MotD without hardly hearing it. turned it off at 00:00 and gave up. Had a good nights sleep though.

Was woken at 7am by the letter box, now I know for defo the postie doesnt come at this time, knew hed left me a note but decided to stay in bed for another hour and make the most of the silence

just gonna write up his note he left me on his 50yr old typewriter

I refer to your note.

I am 80% deaf but according to a friend of mie who is a hearing aid consultant, people like me often hear very clearly low pitched sounds like car exhausts and those of defective machinery such as the bearings and whining electric motors, pumps etc. Very clearly. This is the sort of sound that greets me 24 hours of the day in every room of this house and is very disconcerting, especially at night when kept sleepless by a droning whining noise coming from your airing cupboard and this has been going on for several weeks since you started doing things to your CH (central heating).

I would pointout that during my 30 years in my house this sort of distraction has never happened before here or in any other houses I have lived in. I had considerable experience of dealing with noisy electric motors when, sometimes, peoples lives depend on how silently they operated, but they need to be in good condition.

If you cease your noise so will I......

I have wrote a reply this morning, but not yet sent it, anything you think I should add? see next post

In reply to you letter,

Im am sorry to hear of your situation. We are unaware of any noises coming from our heating and are unable to hear anything coming from it at any time of the day, especially when our heating is only turned on between 8am-11am and 4pm to 9pm, although you will be happy to hear that as of last night (6pm), we removed our 20 year old boiler and have no heating at present. We will be fitting a new Combi boiler and removing any tanks and water pipes from our airing cupboard on Saturday, so if the noise that is bothering you is definitely coming from our airing cupboard it should now have stopped as of 6pm last night.

I would like to point out though that the only work on our central heating we have been doing is replacing old radiators. I would also like to ask that if you have any problems with any noise coming from our house could you please inform us in the future, If you don’t tell us then we do not know, rather than resorting to excessive noise caused on purpose at unreasonable hours. We are neighbours after all and it’d be easier for all to get along.

We like to think we are reasonable adults and if you have any further problems with us we would prefer it if you could knock on our door and explain you can hear an annoying or loud noise which we can try to look into. Otherwise we do not know. Last night for example we had the telly on in the front bedroom, it wasn’t loud but there was no other noise coming from our house (remember we had no heating either) and your retaliation to our noise was dumbfounded.

Regards

Dave and Becky.

Now the only other thing we can think off is we recently put the plasma on the chimney breast wall that adjoins our house. maybe hes hearing a whining noise of interference with something electrical on the other side of the house, we certainly cant hear owt and we dont use the telly throughout the night to keep him awake.

Could he have Tinitis? (don't think that is spelt right but you know what I mean)

I spent years wearing headphones and often hear ringing and whinning noises. I've been known to go around unplugging electrical items until I find out where the noise is coming from. Our new cctv monitor makes a hell of a racket and I sometimes hear the electrical buzz from my partners alarm clock.

Or maybe he's a sarnie short of a picnic and needs to take some pixie pills!

It could possibly be his own alarm clock that is causing him all the aggro.

I would offer to go round to his gaff to hear the noise for yourself. That way you can be sure if it is or isn't something coming from your place. Or maybe just turn his oven on and leave quickly.

Why don't you try again to actually speak to him using loudhailer as necessary Poor old sod may not even know his alarm goes off in the middle of the night...

When we lived in terraced house in London we had neighbour who went completely barking when there was a full moon. Sat outside on patio smashing plates and scat singing. His old man wasn't much better - painted the dustbins purple! DL

yeah I see what you are saying. I presumed at first that he was unaware of his alarm clock going off and sort of came across that way in my first note to him that maybe this was the case and tried to sound sympathetic but after last night Im pretty much convinced hes been doing it on purpose. added to the fact that it didnt go off last night.

Maybe I should make a polite call to the council? he used to have visitors every so often from the council checking on him, at least once a month but Ive not seen them in ages.... maybe if I ask if they could pay him a visit and see how things are? might help to get to the bottom. Like I said in my letter if he hears the noise knock on my door and we'll try to locate any noise but Im convinced there isnt anything otherwise it'd be driving me crackers too

Or maybe offer to get a third , neutral , party in to listen on your behalf. Has he replied to your (very reasonable) note yet ?

I havent posted it, I wrote it at work this morning and I'll post my note at lunch time time will tell though. Aparently talking to the other neighbours near by hes a nasty arrogant old sod.... Not really seeing/speaking properly to him myself I shall reserve judgement for a while but its not looking good.

I mean if he thought there was a loud/annoying noise coming from our house surely speaking to us would more likely resolve the problem rather than putting his alarm clock on full belt in the middle of the night.... doesnt sound too promising at the moment.

He's probably just a bit of a lonely old man. Why not try being friendly? I find it strange that you have been living next to this bloke for some time yet apparently have never spoken to him. I lived in a flat above an old couple previously, I used to help them with a bit of gardening and stuff, it took next to no time but created a load of goodwill which was handy when I wanted to have a noisy bbq or something. It's much better to try and get someone "on side" then it is to enter into a conflict with them.

See what your saying and I agree, I get on with all the other neighbours on the street. we have no problems with anyone, our old house we've had no problems fitting in etc. But this guy is ignorant to an extent. we've come home parked up and hes been doing gardening in the front garden. We've said Hi and had no response. Obviously guessed before the guy was deaf. So next time I saw him I said hi and waved (something visual for him too) but he just glanced and looked away, so we've always thought of him as being an ignorant sod. We had a BBQ last summer and the guy came out of his back door and started spraying air freshener over our fence. I was soooo embarressed with having guests round and stuff, I honestly didnt know what to say... What can you do when that happens, honestly?

I see - I didn't realise there was already a history of him being a tw*t. If he isn't prepared to have a little bit of give and take than it's going to be hard. The thing is, the council probably won't be that interested in something like an alarm clock going off. Where someone has a big stereo cranked up they can go in and confiscate it, but I'm not sure they'll do that in this case. Maybe he has made his point now, and is going to behave for a while?

LOL... well Ive had today off work as I have got a real bad sore throat and can barely speak. but the good news is Ive had a good nights sleep for 2 nights running now nothing, zip, nadda, not a dicky bird from next door, saying that though I spent all night on the computer and we only watched half our of telly last night so that might have been the reason. we will be installing our nwe boiler tomorrow from 8am so I expect a fair bit of noise, should be interesting to see what tomorrow night brings

Its hard to offer advice when you have not seen the situation first hand. However, bass does travel through walls very well, whereas treble does not. If you think he has a genuine complaint then it may be worth looking into reducing the bass on your TV and or speakers to see if that helps.

From what you have been saying, it does seem clear that he is able to hear your TV, as he was able to tell when it was on or off when you watched Match of the Day. Hence my suggestion to reduce bass levels, actually makes speech clearer and easier to hear for you (although explosions are not as impressive).

Might be worth a shot

As long as he is a reasonable person, surely the best plan is to have a friendly chat with him face to face. He almost certainly does not realise the trouble he is causing and if you put it to him politely he may well sort it out for you.

I know its difficult but its worth a try to keep it on a friendly basis if possible.

It never seams to matter who moves in above me, but they always seam to be complete bellends with the music and bass, the current knobber was causing problems for 2 weeks. before the people living above him came and knocked on my door, asking if we wanted to team up to get him evicted

That night the police were actually called out by another neighbour as the noise was compleatly over the top.

The next day we all had notes in our letter boxes offering apoligies and that it would not happen again, although it randomly still does.

2 nights back, at 10.30pm the music came on loud for around 20n secs, it could have been a mistake?, but every 5 mins or so the music came back on even louder, that to me is blatantly taking the ****, at this point i was actually in bed, with ear plugs in and reading a book and i could still hear the music being quite loud.

Yesterday it happened again and i finally retaliated in true childish fashion around 2pm in the afternoon, i was busy playing on the xbox, i then plugged in the rather large surround sound system i have hooked up in the living room and gave him around 3 hours of Gears of War machine gun fire

He was quiet as a mouse after that, even my mate who i was playing with commentated that it was loud as hell as he could hear it via the xbox headset

To be honest, i suspect the bellend has a problem with somebody else`s noise, and is simply trying to "get them back" while at the same time, just pissing everybody else off that has connecting walls (not the right way to do it, but he does look pretty thick)

Regardless, i will win, because i can easily sit and play Gears of War for 6 hours straight without taking a break, and i would guess that the sounds of people being killed is a bit more annoying then some ****** "putting a donk on it"

Me and the missus were the youngest people in the block, all the rest are all decent people, but the god damn flat in the middle must get rented out via the local clampit club.

PS. i have been wearing the "pink and yellow" earplugs for the past 6 months to sleep in and they are pretty good!

Rolls of wallpaper?

Personally i have no problems with my neabours but i like Nigel's suggestion of putting the speackers on full blast for the night
