Unmarked police cars...

always tickles me when you see the traffic up ahead driving at a constant 69.999mph behind a marked patrol car. i always cruise on past at about 80 and ive never been done for it. think most traffic police are human enough to realise that on a clear motorway , its fine and i dont think theyd bother with anything under about 85. not sure about that stretch of M4 though!

read an article in the daily mail about this, they will do u at a speeds of a real 78mph so get a roadangel and check ur speedo accuracy, i have also been done for 78 in a 70,
and also about the signs things, a friend of mine contested his speeding fine on a stretch of road where there were no signs, it was upheld and the speeding fine dropped

Along the M4, between Bath and Bristol, you sometimes see a Vauxhall Omega (WV52 ***) - it's a dark wine sort of colour. Again, apart from the aerials, you wouldn't tell... Except when you see it on the hard shoulder - the standard lights (brakes, indicators, etc. flash in a circular pattern) - the blue lights on the front are hidden behind the grille (you don't see them until they flash).
Sneaky eh?![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)

I've spotted a crappy greenie/blue Omega on this stretch, I'm sure the reg was about the same. again I spotted the Aerials, as i got a bit close I noticed it had small black squares in the corners of the rear windows, which tuned out to be lights. I pulled in behind and followed him. a couple of minutes laters the blues came on when someone went blasting past us.
As a rule, I alway keep an eye out for newish looking, 2-3lt Vauxhall's, Ford's , Merc's, Volvo's, doing around 70 in the slow lane with no dealer info on reg plate.

VASCAR knows how far both cars have travelled and in what time, so it can work out the target cars speed.
When stationary it measures a set distance. Pass under a couple of bridges and let it measure the distance then simply put that in as a constant, park up, look back and again use the shadows to see how long the car takes to cover the known distance. It's harder to spot cars going fast as you are normally some way up the road, and you need to be happy you kept your eyes on the same car throughout, then you have to catch it as you are stationary....so it's a no go in rush hour!!!!

One of my major bug bears I'm afraid gents - if people drove in the left lane when appropriate, people would stop moaning about traffic congestion, and make our motorways 3 lanes instead of 2!

Totally agreed (apart from the 70 figure, which I don't understand
) - I think the police should be pulling people over and educating them, as I am sure some people don't even know they are doing anything wrong.
Of course, these days it seems the police won't pull anyone over unless there's a decent fine in the offing, but a quick word without any fine/paperwork could work wonders. Be even better if they could log it all and then fine persistent offenders.
Still, the average plod (no offence to any outstanding officers on this forum) drives pretty badly (no indicating, wrong lanes etc.) I guess they wouldn't be able to spot all those minor infringements in the first place...
I just wish people paid more attention to the bit in the highway code advising slow drivers to pull over and let others past (unless it's been removed that is).

Just out of interest, have recently been done for "Speed in excess of 70MPH",(offence code SP50) with no specific speed given, how did they do it?
Produced video evidence that showed the speed of their plain police car(a black Volvo V70 Estate) at 70mph, I am then seen on the video passing them and other vehicles that are driving in the left hand lane.
Verdict of the court, (despite my Solicitors protestations) GUILTY as charged 3 points and 60 quid please.
Who needs to get a fix on your speed now, just exceed 70mph and get nicked!!!!

Your speed cannot be detected, with a laser video, whilst their car is on the move.......................Which is what I said before, but in a different way.

I never mentioned VASCAR because the author was worried that he may have been clocked on video.

VASCAR is nearly always used with video

You cant use laser from inside a vehicle at all- must be from outside the car- therefore stationary. (well, they can use it to clock you- but it is inadmissable as evidence as it contravenes the operating rules)

FAO Freak: Mate, have you never seen the Police on overhead Motorway bridges ? They may use something like a Ford Galaxy, or similar, with the side door open, and are sat inside pointing right at you as you burn down lane 3 (not suggesting that you, personally, do that, of course

Don't forget, not all unmarked cars are traffic cars. The surveillance units also have blue lights fitted....but don't worry about them, coz you'd have to be driving like a total **** before they would report you.
