Owned 2 GTi-6's, both were great cars, would buy one again if i had the cash, fun fun fun except the turning circle but it wasnt sloppy in any department, and the sound from the standard exhaust was great not thrashy like some hot hatches.

I've currently got a GTi6, had it for 3 years, only problem I had was aircon pipes leaking, fairly easy to replace. Just make sure that cam belt/tensioner/pulleys/water pump is changed. Common problems are premature cambelt failure, aircon pipes rusting, dodgy electrics. I still love the car after 3 years (soon to upgrade to an Sti though) Cracking handling and superb brakes

Yup I've been on the 306 gtis site www.306gti6.com unsurprisingly! And yes there are a few common faults listed, main one being cam belts, reccomended to change them every 30k miles, aircon pipes corroding is listed, this happened to me before and the dealer charged nearly 300 quid to replcae, thieving gypsey gits.
I think the main thing about the 306 GTI6 is that it can fulfill several roles depending on your mood, needs :- relaxed long distance tourer or ***** out bouncing off the rev limiter type fun with the veins in your forehead standing out! It even had a great stereo!
Me want now!

Having just gone from a GTI-6 99' s plate model to a 99 v reg Scoob i'm afraid i for one am not looking over my shoulder and crying at what i left behind. The air-con knackered, creaks and croaks off the suspension, rattles like a Salvation Army collection tin at Christmas and then the final nail in the coffin a £1000 service bill for radiator, check condition of water pump (cam belt reasons),two front lower wishbones and it still needed new discs and pads at the front!!!
Decided if i was gonna pay this for a service im going to have a vehicle that i had laways wanted- the impreza.
Performance is no comparison, you had to thrash the pug in each gear to get it going whereas in the Scoob you do not and yes i de realise that they are a different engine set up etc and so do run differently but to conclude for me
no comparison
never smiled as much when driving a car and it not being down to "wind" lol

With ref to the A/C pipes corroding. It's either or both of the pipes that clip long the underside of the radiator that start leaking. It's a very common problem, didn't happen on my GTi6 but on another Turbo Diesel 306 I had. Pipes are about £50-60 each from Pug Accessories if you want to fit them yourself. One of the pipes is fairly straightforward, the other a bit of a knuckle grazer.

The GTI-6 is a fantastic car in every respect but it does have quality issues such as Cam Belt failing early and aircon pipes corrode on the clips and air con leaks, radiators are made of paper and fall to bits, electrics are poor alarm goes off when it feels like I have owned one for 5 yrs had all these problems but still love it!! I sometimes prefere driving it to my 280 bhp Nissan s14a
