If we are getting all nostalgic, my favourite plane of all time is probably the English Electric Lightning interceptor from the 60's - I saw one doing a demo at the Mildenhall (IIRC) Air Show back in the late 60's, and the pilot took off, engaged reheat, stood it on its tail and it just climbed vertically. Rather impressive.....

I swapped trips in Singapore with a Lightning pilot for a Vulcan ride. The Lightning was really impressive of course and we were climbing vertically out of Tengah when he told me to do a few rolls on the way up! Quite a machine.
When he got the hang of the Vulcan it was all I could do to get him to agree that we had better end the trip for lack of fuel. He loved every minute of it
