I want to live in the country that pslewis lives in where everything is rosy, the govt are brilliant and schoolteachers earn a fortune.

But as I don't know where his country is, I'll have to make do with the UK and vote out the bureaucracy that is certainly gonna cripple the country if the incumbents stay in power.

The problem with the Tories back in the early 90's is that they got complacent, arrogant, infighting and had 'lost' their way. John Major did what he could but it was too late. The same thing is starting to happen with labour and will not stop.

I can't say I like Mr Blair or the current Labour Government and I have concerns over tax and crime etc.

But...

I can remember the times when Mr Howard was involved with the last tory Government. I remember the poll tax joke, the boom and bust and the 16% interest rates.

I find myself in a position that I just can't risk Howard getting in and that happening again.

And as for Iraq, Howard says himself he would have taken the same decision as Blair so I can't see how the Tories are using the money spent on the Iraq war as an argument.

The poll tax wasn't a joke - it was poorly implemented was all. It's certainly less of a joke than the Lib Dems local income tax! The world economy was going through a period of boom and bust, with high interest rates across Europe and the US - sod all to do with the Tories, just as the current global stability is nothing to do with Tony.

To be clear, Howard says he would have made the same decision based on the facts made public - the facts now coming to light may have changed the view of the house and call into quesiton Blair's honesty. If Blair went to war dishonestly, then a lot of money has been wasted on a needless war is the point.

The poll tax was poorly implemented by the Tory Government.

The world economy was turbulent at the time but the Tory government set the interest rates and it was the government who failed to control the economy and inflation.

I'm sorry but it took me years for my family to get over the financial fall out and with Howard in charge I dont believe the Tories have moved on enough.

The Conservatives lost this election when they appointed Howard IMO.
He only got in on the back of the blue rinse Thatcher lovers and that will cost them this election.
The Tories need new blood not a thow back of the 80's.

High interest rates are great for savers and pensioners. Current unemployment is not much lower than it was back then - the main difference being the manipulation of the figures by Labour such that many are now classed as disabled or not counted at all.

I am worse off under Labour thanks to the red tape strangling entrepeneurs and commerce and exorbitant taxes driving business overseas. I see businesses moving their head offices (and their profits) overseas on a daily basis. This ultimately reduces re-investment in the economy (and I don't count civil service excess as investing in the country!).

I'm not saying the Tories were perfect, they clearly weren't towards the end, but the wheels are coming off the Labour wagon and people are losing faith. We need a change before the agenda becomes too socialist.

It's just myself and most of the people I talk to remember Howard as a part of that Tory shambles.
I truely believe the old brigade voted him in to try and restore the glory years and it will totaly back fire on them.
I think the tories would have been better off staying with IDS at least he distanced the party from the past.

They are not for me and my experiences and what i see with my own eyes tell me this. I voted Labour 7 years ago because i wanted an change from the Tory farse that was govenrment at that time.

I have not seen the improvements promised by Labour, there is no accountability or people taking responsibility and also they lie and deceive. Having said that i do agree with Gordo giving the Bank of England responsibility for interest rates.

I could not bring myself to vote for them this time and i feel the Torys are the best of a mundane bunch but do stand a chance of getting in and do seem to care about the issues close to my heart. Health, schools/education. Police/crime & immigration. I have more in common with the Tories policies on these issues that i do the others.

As for the Lib Dems they only are there to make up the numbers IMHO

I personally cant be swayed by the policies of the different parties,im voting on the fact that we are better off(money in pocket) and live in a much more stable environment nowadays.

It seems that alot of people out there have forgotten what it was like to go through the threat of redundancy in vast amounts of different professions throughout the country and ridiculously high interest rates ect ect.

Personally,as long as ive got a fairly comfortable way of living,without any money worries,then i dont care who runs the country- good or bad issues aside,it seems that Labour are the only ones that give me the confidence to do this,as the proof is there today-most of us can afford to have a nice house/car/decent way of living and be able to buy little extra things that we dont really need.

It wasnt that many years ago that every other person i knew wasnt sure if they would have a job in 6 months time-i dont know anyone that feels that way now.
