Ive had a couple of MY99's and never fiddled with the airbox, and still had MAF failures, and 02 come to think of it. Just because you haven't had issue, doesn't make yours the benchmark for all cars. I am purely talking Subaru here, not your previous cars. They do go wrong. In fact, many believe its the reason for the later AE802 ECU map being so conservative, because Subaru had a number of MY99 engine failures which they put down to lean mapping... missing the MAF problem. Id love to know how many they have sold
Safe to run in the very short term with 02 disconnected.
MAF problem is prevelant on any MY99/00 car. Bugeye's seem ok, and pre MY99 also rare to get a problem.

When I read something like, "Lambda Sensors go at between 10k and 40k miles" I feel the need to step in and clear up before someone gets the wrong advice.
I have NEVER re-newed a Lambda Sensor or a MAF Sensor for that matter on ANY car I have ever owned ......... now, my Impreza is proving to be the most reliable solid car I have ever owned - but reading the scare stories on here you would think they were made out of Balsa Wood!!
My MY00 has hesitated since new, some days its worse - in the summer it tends to disappear.
Oddly, in the best weather for max power - misty, drizzle, cold morning - makes it worse (almost like a damp in the ignition effect)
Lighten up

Cheers Bob I will give that a try tonight.
In conclusion (Please tell me if I am wrong!!!!):
The MAF sensor is probably OK as when disconnected the car stalls straight away. The car only seems to surge at lower revs i.e. 2000RPM when driving at a constant speed so this would point towards the Lambda sensor.
Will try and clean contacts in the coil pack tonight and if it carries on will learn to ignore it!!!!
