there is a difference between shooting cats and shooting cats. Air rifle is a , a bb gun will just teach it a lesson. I have 2 cats BTW, and can confirm the bb gun with plastic shot works at stopping strays coming in the house, pissing up the walls and nicking food

6ft panel fencing with a single strand of electric fencing running around the top. As they bound up the fence the other side they get knocked back by the voltage, unharmed, into their own garden.

Not bad though - 28 relatively helpful & constructive posts before some idiot suggests animal cruelty...

the chances of hitting a cat in the eye as it it teararsing it out of the catflap are a bit slim , credit me with some sense please. I've just said I have 2 of my own, I wouldn't want to maim a cat, purely scare it off. You can't train cats, they only understand fear or stinging pain. I knew for a fact that the bb gun wouldnt even break the skin, because I tested it first on the GF

Yes but did you test it on her eye, I think not, ok if it's not going to hurt let her pop one off in your eye and see if it hurts.

But what I'm getting at is if it hit the cat in the eye by accident ,there again you are a responsible pet owner

I can confirm the electric fence idea works but you need a proper low voltage animal fence and you can't put in on the border to your property.

If you want to electrify the border to your lawn or pond with a properly designed low voltage fence it's perfectly legal as long as you garden is enclosed and won't cause them any harm. It does make them jump when they touch their nose on it however they learn after a couple of jolts.

I no longer have any problems with cats around the pond and most dont even bother to come on the garden any more.

But now I've got bloody mice in the shed.

Cheers

the only eye it could possibly hit is it's brown eye, how many times have you seen a cat look over its shoulder when doing a runner? Even if you did manage a bisley trophy winning shot and caught it on the bunghole, it would soon find its way out. I am talking about a £30 peice of spring loaded ****e here with an effective range of about 15ft, not a £1500 feinwerkbau match pistol.

And thanks, I am

Great now thanks

I've now caught a total of 8 mice and have reset the traps for tonight.

Must say as an animal lover myself I don't like to see the mice in traps but I cant believe the damage they have done in the shed through winter. Must have been nesting in there at the end of last year.

Cheers

if you get a cat to get rid if the mice the cat will prolly deposit them on the door step, so you can have them back

Glad alls ok

I know where your coming from on that front with the mice I have many a time walked down the road in the early hours with a mouse in a jar to set it free in the field down the road

One of the daft things that I have done was last night was stop in the middle of the road to pick up a hedghog and put it over a hedge to get it out of the road because some feckwit will use it as target pratice "I must be mad"

Yeh but they also bring nesting birds etc. I'm wont harm cats but I love to see wildlife in the garden. I'm lucky enough to live close enough to the countryside to get all sorts of birds, squirels and other wildlife including the odd fox on the garden. Unfortunately I also get the odd heron that take a liking to my pond as well as the mice problem.
I can put up with all the vermin and predators that are natural for the area but I don't like the fact that there are a large number of cats in the area which have been introduced by owners that must not care about the wildlife or who are not intelligent enough to know the effects large numbers of domestic cats have on the local wildlife.

I would do the same as well.

I tried the humane traps but they have not worked.

The poison takes time to work and it's a poor death so not using it

The snap traps with a bit of chocolate have worked nearly every night.
Just hope it's quick?

Cheers

just as an aside, snap traps are excellent for catching sparrows, the larger variants designed for rats are ideal for corvids or woodpidgeons
