We have a large french lop, who is allowed free reign of the garden and shed, but also spends a lot of time in the house. He's extremely clean, and will only go to the toilet in the garden or in his litter trays. We haven't made any special efforts to rabbit-proof the garden (though obviously all the fencing is in good condition and goes down to ground level) as he has never shown any interest in escaping - why would he, when we have a large garden and he gets to do pretty much whatever he pleases?!

He's extremely friendly and loves being fussed, easily as much as a dog likes to be. When we looked after my parents' old (but very friendly) dog, he didn't like it at all and was quite upset, but I guess if he lived with the dog for some time, he'd get used to it.

I do think it's well worth having the rabbit neutered/spayed (unless you want to breed from it) as it makes them much more docile and prevents 'spraying' and other problems.
They make much better pets than most people realise, but the more freedom you give it, the happier it will be and the more friendly towards your family.

To give you an idea of size, here he is as a baby (6 weeks old):

and here he is at about 6 months old (he's even bigger now):
