The speed limit should NOT be raised until the nation (less the minority) learns correct lane discipine. IMO every new driver should have at least one mandatory lesson on how to drive on a 3 lane motorway prior to taking a test.
until then it should remain at 70 mph .
The germans have de-restricted speed limits on 2 lane autobahns and it works because they have better lane discipline.
If i had a pound for every motorist i've seen thats sat in the middle/outside lane when there is clearly no requirement to, i could retire tomorrow.
Just my tuppence worth.

I should think there would be better lane discipline with unrestricted motorways when volvo types realise they cant legally sit at 70 in the outside lane

The facts are that currently this Countrys law states that on a motorway that 70 mph is the maximum permitted speed. Therefore exceeding that speed means that a law is being broken. Simple?
Now the difficult bit, is that law reasonable? Is it a good law? And should so much money and other resources be spent is upholding that law? When resources are so limited. As tax payers we should expect the biggest bang for our buck, and speed cameras dont provide that. But in one simple way Pete is right, break a law (even a bad one) and you are a criminal.
Also most laws exist to try and prevent antisocial behavior, they are rules for good citizenship and good living. However the current speed limits probably fails on all those questions, some (near schools, playgrounds etc) are too high whilst most are too low.
