i'm a HGV driver as reading what half of you have wrote proves you've never driven anything the size a artic is so how can you comment?? try stopping a vehicle that weighs 44 ton!! so doing something stupid like braking hard in front of a HGV could easily result in you being killed simply because the driver can't stop in time due to your stupid act.

Most HGV drivers get well over the minimum wage - there simply aren't enough of them. Tesco are currently recruiting in Poland! The restrictions on working time imposed by the new RTD mean HGV drivers can't (legitimately) do the overtime they once used to. If you never, ever, want to be out of work again, get your C+E licence!

Our trucks have those 'Well Driven' numbers on the back and, though some calls are perfectly legit, many of them are from idiots who don't understand how a truck has to drive - I always rather liked the "He didn't give way to me when I was joining the motorway"

There are examples of really bad lorry driving (the artic with L plates on tailgating me through the cones on the M25 - if that's how he's being taught, then heaven help him later!) - but there are far, FAR more examples of bad car driving.

I'm delayed far more often by cars overtaking slowly than by trucks.

Yes a lot of trucks are well driven. There are also a lot of truckers that hold people up by doing 56 past a truck doing 53. If they make 5 minutes up on them i'd be shocked, they'd be better just not washing their hands at a service station and saving 2 minutes that way. (Not that that is confined to truckers, plenty of idiots in cars eager to get one car ahead)

There is the same problem as with bus drivers, they seem to have interpreted the part in the highway code that says to use your indicator before making a manouvere as saying once your indicator is on you have right of way.

Pull that stunt on me and you might get the choice of the underside of my triler or the weeds/kerb. No matter what you drive, it is not as quick as a two way radio so be very careful who you do it to.

But hang on a mo... did you actually read what i typed....

so your saying its ok for an arctic to be in the left hand lane on a roundabout, and turn right, to which i conceded.... but in the next breath, your saying pull that stunt on me and you would get two wheels over your bonnet..

READ THE POST!!! if a hgv is travelling accros the roundabout, ie straight on... and a car is on your left and turning right, as they are legally entitled to .. you would be in the wrong if you hit them.. hence my post.

why should CARS be allowed to turn right by travelling around the outside of a roundabout... you have just clarrified what would happen if it was a hgv going straight on, as what would happen if it was a car..

there is no need for cars!!! to use the inside lane when turning right. it would speed traffic flow no end, and you wouldnt have to watchg for ******* jumping out on r/bouts and near on causing a tbone

An HGV can use the inside lane on a r/about when turning right. A car should use the outside lane on a r/about when turning right.

In both cases the correct indication should be given as all times.

This is basic roadcraft as is stated clearly in the highway code.

Sadly this thread shows up truck drivers general attitude towards anyone else on the road...

Keep out of their way - they are dangerous and arrogant!

Just to add my 2p's worth, about 5 years ago in Chester a lorry was in the left lane and a car was in the right hand lane both going round the roundabout. Not sure exactly what happened but the lorry toppled over and landed on the car killing the occupants of the car outright. Moral of the story - stay away from lorrys on roundabouts.

I used to think wagon drivers were OK, just 'misunderstood' ... Then I got a lift with one guy - the torrent of abuse he spewed at other road users through the whole journey stunned me!

I generally make a point of letting them out to make an overtake (when travelling on a bike or fast car ) - But attitudes like those registering on here might make me think again...

When I passed my HGV (1981 I think ) I was told when approaching a roundabout with 2 lanes and you want to turn right , you take BOTH lanes up with indicator showing turning right , I still do this today making sure a car can't get in either lane ( although they still try ) this way there is no confusion.

As for braking hard a car weighing 1 .5 tonne in front of a HGV weighing up to 44 tonne just for a "tit for tat " is just asking for trouble and I know of plenty of HGV drivers would have run you off the road you deserve all you get

Poor attitude from some, mirroring some truckers attitudes on the road.

It must get annoying driving a truck and having to manouvere it around with many not appreciating the difficulties in this, but nobody owns the road and that doesn't matter whether they are doing it for a job or for leisure.

Its very amusing the heroic attitude most people adopt in their cars (and trucks). I tend to walk faster than a lot of people and when I'm walking around town if someone steps into my way or stands in it they tend to move over or apologise or at least smile or acknowledge me. When i'm overtaking cars on a dual carriageway and a vehicle pulls out causing me to brake I rarely see an apologetic hand being raised or flash of the hazards.

What it all comes down to is that people think they are tough when cocooned by a couple of tonnes of metal, brings out the worst macho streak in everyone, just like this thread.

Roundabouts... agreed! Keep well clear of anything larger than your own vehicle... even cars don't notice bikes and can block of your exit 'accidentally' Good common sense!

I don't think the starting comment had anything to do with braking hard once overtaking had been achieved... just using a lighter throttle would have the same effect. As for all the aggressive typing about running people off the road... It is possible someone was forced into an overtake and then had a vehicle problem causing them to lose speed...

1996 car on the hard shoulder hazards on 5am in the morning, car pulls straight on to the motorway doing 5mph approx, wagon weighting in at 38tonne doing 56mph 10yards from the car when they pulled on to the motorway,BANG the car went from 5mph to 56mph in 1 second,it was a escort but the size of a mini now with 4 people in it, 1 dead, 1 broken back and legs, one with a broken kneck and the driver was ok just a stiff kneck motorway was closed for 9 hours and the car driver got off with it (no test no mot no insurance),and the wagon driver was me,so dont preach to me about road safety(spelling).this is why you should never ever cut and wagon up or slam your brakes on in front of one or this could be you.

Don't forget all you car drivers .. HGV drivers have cars as well and have to put up with slow overtaking Lorries , I don't condone what the Tesco drivers were "supposed " to be doing But its not our fault we have to put up with speed limiters , If I am sat at 56mph and I catch up with a lorry in front I am going faster than him , so have the right to overtake , I dont do this to upset car drivers its just that some nights I might have 680k 's (approx 440 mile ) to drive and I want to get on with it

As for this thread giving HGV drivers a bad name ..... what about the bloke who started the thread !!

Mart 360 READ THE POST. I am referring to to slowing down, deliberately to a very slow speed before a hill.
Faced with the choice of a moving trailer and the weeds, I know which you will pick.
