My mate had one right outside his bedroom window.... he found that by shooting the little light sensor on the top of it with an air rifle it would disable the light without making it look obviously damaged!
(make sure you have a safe line of fire though! )

This isn't a nimby thing at all, it's nimfy. It's right in my view through the front window, it looks ridiculous and isn't needed as there's plenty of light from the existing streetlamps.
My neighbour across the road has built an extension. I was given the chance to object despite the fact that I can't really see his house directly from mine (it's offset) and it would have little, if any, effect on my house. Obviously, I didn't object. Yet now they stick this offensive thing right outside my house without so much as a mention.
I wouldn't have minded if it was offset to the corner of my property where 2 footpaths converge as it would look much better and wouldn't be in direct line of sight from the 2 main rooms of the house. This would involve them moving the thing about 6 feet to the right (as seen from the house).

First post here, so Hi.
Do the council have to give you notice of putting a street light up? No, not if it's on the Highway as planning permission isn't needed (some folks actually want street lights outside their houses). From the picture it would appear to be on highway land, but there is usually a concrete back edge to the footpath or grass service strip, so that may help you determine land ownership.
Lights should generally be placed on the boundary lines between properties so they're not directly in the line of sight of a window. Works well on a straight road, but not always possible due road layout/trees etc.
If the road is being re-lit, the council have a duty to achieve certain levels on the carriageway and footway. Sometimes lights can't always be placed in the same position as the old one's, and/or additional lights may be required. Is this the case here. The lights should also be placed on the outside of bends, as this gives the driver a better vision of the road alignment.
I can tell you now why the new light isn't working. There is no electricity supply in there yet. It usually takes the electricity companies 5 or 6 weeks to get the connection done. There will be a bigger patch of reinstatement around the post once this is done.
When contacting the council about this, please try to be civil and reasonable. I am far more likely to decide to move a street light if somebody keeps it polite, than from a ranting abusive phone call or email ;-)
To be honest, if you're asking for it to be moved 6 feet, I wouldn't have any problems, providing it didn't cause a more severe impact on somebody else.
Hope this is helpful.

I have seen deflectors placed on the back of street lamps so the light does not come in through your window.
it may be worth asking for one to be installed.
just a thought.

UPDATE: Result! The council are moving the lamp to the right of my house, no longer in direct line of sight of any of my rooms and still capable of lighting the public footpath.
Everyone's a winner!

I've noted the cat checking the fluid level in the rear diff... I think this feline should be employed as you cant prosecute a cat for criminal damage... {er, well, maybe this officious Labour lot mighthave a go...]
Go paint the pole with Kit E Kat leading to the fuse box
Maybe your cars will be safer as there is better light there???

Tell you what, I'll come and erect a dirty great streetlamp right outside your house, in direct line of sight from your living room window and for good measure I'll shine the ******* thing right into your bedroom at night, then we'll see how you like it?
Which part of "the council have agreed to move it" are you having difficulty with?

Looks a bit dark round your place, I would have thought a bit of light would have been a bonus. Doesnt seem close enough to cause a light problem, some one has to have a light outside their house, also the nearer you are to a street lamp the less likely it is for car theft etc....
Give it a try for a while you might get use to it. We miss the one outside our property when a bulb goes......
Be better when they move it though ..... no wonder council tax is so f&&king high!

OK, just for the hard of understanding: even without this new lamp there is plenty of streetlighting. I have no problem with a street light being near my property, however I think it's perfectly reasonable to have it offset from my property and not directly outside and the council agreed.
The next person that thinks I should leave it where it is can only comment if they provide a picture of the streetlight that is nearest to their house. I'll bet not a single one of you has one directly outside.

Hi Notoriousrev
Did you have to argue your case with the council or did they agree easily? It seems to have been resolved quickly so maybe a council that listens to the customer for once!

I e-mailed them after hours on friday night, the council bloke knocked on the door monday morning and showed MrsREV the new location and asked if that was OK. She agreed it was fine and they said they'd get it shifted, it was that easy.

Anyway NIMFY is supposed to be a term describing something happening in your area - not meant to be a literal translation of actually being in your front yard !
NRev - keep a close eye on any "extras" in your council tax next year .

Result! We have the opposite problem here as we want more street lighting as cars keep getting vandalised but to no avail. The council/highways are not interested, even though this has been going on for years. Glad you got yours sorted though, no need for Mrs Rev to hang the blackout curtains up then!

I'm confused - one page 1 you complain that there is a street light lighting up your house and then you complain that it isn't working - I think you might be a cereal complainer.... (Hey - My cornflakes are soggy)

Dave is the issue that Mrs Rev wont play "Bed Gymnastics" unless the "lights out"? Thus explaining your angry and frustrated posts?

Glad of the result for you Not Rev. Shows that they will listen sometimes.
We used to have a "friesian" cat like that, lovely looking creature she was too.

It's 32 feet from the bedroom window, and slightly less from the living room window 'cos that's a bay. What do I win?
