stay out of the anti 4x4 debate
if they ban 4x4's(and they wont, what would Tony Blair drive let alone the queen) the next thing will be cars with more than 100bhp and stereos that go louder than 40db
I'd get behind any debate that supports cars (being as this is a car forum)
DONT GET INVOLVED OR I'LL COME TO YOUR HOUSES AND DRIVE OVER YOUR SAD LITTLE 'FAKE' 4X4'S

I agree, that if (and that's a big if) they ban or penalise 4x4 drivers, they will move onto sports/fast cars! Shame some of the people who are jumping on this bandwagon can't see that!

Schools out early.....posts like that make me reconsider my argument about 4x4s being dangerous outside schools....perhaps a little natural selection wouldn't be so bad afterall......

Ps i drive 2 Land Rover Discoverys
1 LPG v8i which has no emissions, no Co2 problems and does'nt pay congestion charges (because red Ken understands that its better than a new mini for pollution)
2 TDi 35mpg = what does your car do?? bet mines better than yours and its got a cat (where's yours gone?)

A good mate of mine recently gave the leader of the Scottish Greens (Robin Harper MSP, thorougly nice chap btw) a lift in his 2 tonne 4x4 which Robin declared as quite environmentally friendly.
The car? 1986 Merc 300TE 4-matic. The reason? It was 20 years old and had survived the test of time and was therefore a good use of resources.

Sorry to sound of there but narrowminded idiots give me the a*se ache
Nothing personal you understand
Shows that older cars are better??????????
How does that work. I get the bit about resouces but the emmision levels must be through the roof, let alone the asbestos in the clutch and brakes.
As i said, sorry if i caused offence
(gets down of off soap box)

No offence taken, just relaying a story. Don't see how it's narrow-minded of him though, quite forward thinking really, not the expected comment from a Green. If you think about it, it's the resources taken to make the car, e.g. smelting aluminium, miles of cabling, glass etc. which is the bigger cost to the environment. If that energy can be used for 20 years, then the exhaust emmissions are the lesser part of the equation. It's an auto and I'm sure the pads have been changed a few times in the last two decades, so no asbestos to speak of.
What does annoy me is that a lot of the environmental policy of local councils is misguided, e.g. I think there was a Clarkson article recently, where he was complaining about councils driving round all day in a £60k refuse van to pick up newspapers from middle class homes. How long is it going to take to recoup the energy involved in building that truck and running it all day, by collecting newspapers!

The Forester is perfect for my surburban setting (bloody speed bumps), plenty of room for those family days out with bicycles, pushchairs, lie-flat baby car seat, etc.
Shame we couldn't afford an XT, but I'm not complaining, I believe the S Turbo is cheaper to insure!![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Does your car have a PPP, apparently it's very good on both the 2.0 and 2.5 engines?

p.s. Petrol is less than half price in comparison to the UK, and insurance about a third.. and with petrol so cheap, 4x4's absolutely everywhere

Depending where in Oz you are, Ecutek is an option.
MRT are in Sydney, who I believe can do it.
Anyway, back to the matter in hand......
I blame Tony Blair that you can't have a PPP on your Forester!!
