Killzone 2 looks the killer title so far.
Any more to the rumour Apple were producing a version of iTunes for it?
I agree that the next getaway looks impressive, but I hope it plays better than the first 2 - worst game I ever bought. Trouble is the finished game looked nothing like the original pics that appeared in Edge when the PS2 first came out.

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.
Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.
Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.

I'm a bit confused...
Read that the PS3 has a single 3.2Ghz processor and the Xbox 360 has 3 3.2Ghz processors, yet your saying the PS3 is 2x more powerful...???? hows that work then?????

IIRC the XBox's CPU is single threaded, the PS3's Cell chip is multi threaded. Also the PS3's chip has something like 8 "sub-brains" (Sygergistic ?)

XBox 360
Under the bonnet, 360 will boast three symmetrical IBM PowerPC 3.2GHz cores combined with a custom ATI 500MHz GPU with 10Mb of embedded DRAM, all supported by 512Mb of GDDR3 RAM. All of which delivers a teraflop of overall performance.

Cell Processor
PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz
1 VMX vector unit per core
512KB L2 cache
7 x SPE @3.2GHz
7 x 128b 128 SIMD GPRs
7 x 256KB SRAM for SPE
* 1 of 8 SPEs reserved for redundancy
total floating point performance: 2.18 GFLOPS

the ps3 has actually has 8 3.2 GHZ processors, but all on one chip:

They've always said it would go into Computers - and apparently you can run 13 of them in parallel

*ALL* of the Sony PS3 demos, with the exception of the technical demos (ie the ducks and the getaway demo), Epic's Unreal demo, and the EA Sports Fight Night demo, are pre-rendered CG movies and are not running realtime. Note that the EA sports demo had no crowd or background, the Getaway demo had no game logic or AI / crowd pathfinding etc. it was just a scripted CG sequence running through the CPU and GPU.
Full stop. End of story.

Their press launch comparison was actually between PS3 (Cell CPU and Nvidia GPU together) vs the Xbox 360 Power PC CPUs only. (not including the GPU)
In actual fact they are very evenly matched, with PS3 very slightly the more powerful. However the PS3 can do 1080 progressive scan, dual monitor, whereas the Xbox can only manage 1080 interlaced, single monitor.

HI Ed.
Go easy on them![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
After all you ARE in the business..
It's amazing isnt it how easily everyone gets swept up in the hyperbole...
Altho there has been plenty of healthy scepticism via Eurogamer![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
So what has been your favourite part of E3 so far?
(apart from the visit's to '4Play' afterwards
)
We have been watching with much trepidation, excitement and apathy all rolled together at work.
J Allard should sell sand to Arabs
Iwata and Robby (Robby ESPECIALLY really should leave the humour to professionals..
Was most impressed with Epic's work on Unreal3 (unsurprisingly).

So what will we be seeing then?
Seeing as you are both slating the idea of the demos and photo-realistic graphics, should we not really expect much progress between PS2/PS3 or Xbox/Xbox360?
Will there be any techno leap for the next gen consoles, or will we get "slightly better" graphics/gameplay?
I'm hoping for a big leap this time around, but unsure how it will pan out.

not slating anyone's opinions DW, merely being able to step back and see thru the BS and marketing for what it is![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
I think a LOT of dev' companies are in a state of panic.
Epic has done a fab job scaring the bejesus out of everyone.
Expect better and busier 'worlds' to pay within.. but dont expect the KillZOne 2 video quality just yet:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/616/616591p1.html![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
It's a BIG jump hardware wise for developers.. but the irony is that there is no dev equipment out there yet able to even meet let alone exceed the console theoretical performance.
As for better gameply? hm
depends what you mean by better.
better as in more complex- I expect so.
better is on more fun- not convinced.
bigger development/marketing budgets do not mean that games will be more fun to the same magnitude of the graphical leap. sad but true.
Also; expect the big two (Sony and M$) to be invading every waking bloody second on or offline with their new lifestyle messages..
I dont know how anyone will have the time for this alternate life.
I wont![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
As for the designs- hmm:
360- no ta.
Ps3- george forman grill?![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Revolution - hmmmm![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
really looking forward to see what control innovations Nintendo will be bringing to us all.
witness the qualiy of Epic's work
![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
(and it is coming to PS3 too)

EdCase, thanks for confirming my suspicions on the pre-rendered badness. Its all becoming far too common place these days.
I guess development costs are going to spiral further - a consequence of bigger dev teams and longer development times.
More financial burden on the publisher.
In-house engines increasingly becoming a thing of the past, middle-ware companies getting stronger.
Publishers playing safe by sticking to "proven" genres resulting in less original games
Games development funding starts looking to the "hollywood" funding model. Its intriguing comparing the rise of video game production to film production. I can see more than a passing resemblance.
