Ok, perhaps this thread needs some balance

Our postie provides a brilliant service, all the more commendable considering one of my dogs has serious issues with him, and he appears to deliver the post in fear of his life (even though there is a locked door between them)

Quite how he thinks 6 stone of "curious" dog is going to fit through the letterbox is anyone's guess, but there you go.

We get a magazine delivered weekly on subscription. One week the free gift (a camera film) was missing.

He found it in the sorting office the following day, put two and two together and remembered it was ours. Delivered it with that mornings post

hmmm... i worked in royal mail for 15 years, starting as a postal cadet, then postie, driver, phg, supervisor, and customer services..... u wonder why i complain?? i KNOW the attitude of SOME posties... and postman is of the "i cant be arsed" attituded!! i also know some posties are great and really good... but there will always be the ones who **** it up and give the place a bad reputation...

it is hardley a difficult taxing job is it.. and for £300 a week it aint exactly hard work either... i mean.. 3 breaks a day (usually extended by some) *** breaks, wonder round breaks.... ALWAYS make time at end of shift... good god.. i was even home 2 and half hours before my shift ended on a few occasions, and STILL getting paid!!!

soryy if your argument about "you try being a postie etc etc " dosnt hold any weight with me, during my 15yrs there i did most jobs and most shifts... NONE were particularly difficult.. boring yes... difficult NO!!!

On GMTV yesterday they were talking about the postal service and many of the people who work for Royal Mail contacted the show saying that if any letters fall in the bottom of the baskets they don't bother to deliver them and if they only have one letter for a house they'll often leave it until the next day, so much for first class service. I know this is probably the minority (well I'd like to hope so) it's always the case that a few let down a company.

With our work we have to rely on the postal service a lot and they are ALWAYS losing our mail costing us more money all the time. I know that if there was another postal service for letters I'd use it.

Agree totally

You just wouldn't of believed our joy when our tickets for our wedding in New Zealand last year were lost in the post. Due to leave on boxing day and had to get tickets re-printed on Christmas eve and collect them through in Glasgow

Never mind, on the news last night it they stated that they are now only losing 16,000,000 items of mail a year now....

Finally, jap2scrap, you have absolutely no idea the logistics that is behind the Royal Mail. We are a 24/7 365 day a year company. When you postie has finished saturday morning, and you post the reply to the junk mail you got back to "xxx mag special" , that is then collected, processed, moved around the country and then delivered on the following monday
chris. £1074 better off, thanks Royal Mail, its paying for my trip to Stelvio this year.

Obviously they'll making loads of profit now they've got shut of over 3,000 workers and halved the number of deliveries.

I now have to collect my business post from the next town, as by the time the postman delivers it, I've missed the bank deadline for paying cheques in. It's pathetic.

The level of service I receive (or rather, lack of) is disgusting. My mail turns up anytime between 11am and 2pm, I have a different postie almost every day and most simply don’t seem to give a **** about which door they push it through.

It’s only Wednesday and I’ve already had mail for my next door neighbour twice this week. My neighbour on the other side is completely blind and lives on his own – I’ve lost track of the amount of times special NHS packages marked ‘URGENT’ have come through my door, or have just been left on *my* doorstep, when all are *clearly* marked with his house number.

In addition, I get ‘Signed For’ items put through my letterbox with normal items all the time, and large items, which are supposed to be carded if there is nobody in, just left on the doorstep – that happened only yesterday - and they don't even knock.

Then, when you complain, the cheeky sods try and make out you weren’t in when they knocked – I work from home *every* day and always know when the postie comes as I can hear them walking up my gravel drive. In simple terms, they lie. On a couple of occasions I’ve had them about it and they are rather surprised when I’m able to tell that exactly what time they delivered the mail the day before because I saw them from my office window above.

Running a mail order giftware business, I also use them for some of our sent items, and quite how they manage to lose *so* many items between picking them up from our unit and them arriving at their depot is totally beyond me – we send everything ‘Signed For’ and they don’t even make it onto the Royal Mail system! The number of items lost (or stolen?) is simply ridiculous.

“…Wait till deregulation??”

I wish it were here tomorrow!! I’d happily pay more for a better service.

Now don’t get me wrong, I fully appreciate there are loads of posties who take pride in their work and go above and beyond the call of duty. However, I have four close friends who are all posties, and they themselves admit the job is a sinch, claiming it to be the easiest they’ve ever had, so I don’t buy the ‘woe is us’ routine some are touting.

Half time I think you lot make all this bollox up just to have something to post,chill out and watch Celebrity Love Island!
PMSL – Like I’ve got nothing better to do than sit here and make stuff up!! You’re more than welcome to come and spend a day in my office - You’ll soon get sick of customers wanting to know why their parcel has apparently been sent back to us by Royal mail as ‘uncalled for’ when the customer never even received a calling card in the first place.

Result? As soon as we get it back we have to send it straight back out again at extra cost to ourselves. So we end up paying Royal Mail *twice* for a job they never even did properly in the first place - No wonder they can afford a bonus!

Post Office Ltd. actually increased it's losses to £110 Million, so instead of a bonus, you'll have to take a pay cut.

You need to start pushing those financial services and home phone more!

Keep them pensioners locked in until they sign up for something!

I stick by what I said earlier. I don't think it's the easiest job in the world - far from it. Completely different types of jobs I know, but I was an accountant before doing this and being a postman is significantly harder.

did i read that right??? postman plus harder in same sentance..????

ohhhhhhhhh please..... i am a girl and i found it easy work!!!! YES even carrying that oh so heavy bag.... YES even driving the lorries..... oh sooooooooooooo hard....NOT!!!!!!!!


please... do me a favour!!!! it aint hard to read a letter and post it in the correct door...even at 7am!!!!! (cos you aint allowed to deliver before 7am... and even tho you have been up since 4am, u should of made sure you went to bed early enough not to be knackered!! plus you have had breakfast and tea BEFORE you even leave the office!!!)

I think it's physically hard work, in my opinion.

I also think I am going to give up arguing in this thread, because I'm onto a loser.

I stand by what I said earlier. The service round here is excellent with letters that were posted yesterday arvo arriving this morning - good value in my opinion. When we go on holiday I have a chat with our postie and he stops the delivery until we return and the hound eagerly awaits his arrival in the morning as he usually gets some Markies for his troubles - of course he looks a bit gutted if we don't have any post and he sees said postie wandering down the lane.

mmmmiddy i don't bother pushing the homephone thing as i think its bollox, not the product just the way its done, you have to rely on the customer to quote your refrence number, and thats if they get asked for it if someone comes in and askes about it i will help but as far as push it i wont
just to add if royal mail is making a profit wheres it coming from? they dont sell anything, so how can they make money when its counters that are selling all the stamps and services for them? its just juggling fingures to make things look better

Must tell you what happened at work today.

We received an A4 envelope that had been very badly damaged ie 2 sides had been completely ripped open and therefore the contents had gone!

The letter came in a see-through bag from the Royal Mail.The bag had instructions on it that said something like..............

IF YOU THINK ANY PART OF THIS DELIVERY IS DAMAGED OR MISSING PLEASE PICK UP A CLAIMS FORM FROM THE POST OFFICE.

The frickin envelope was completely empty.....so of course there was something missing....DOH!

Made me laugh and the trouble is because the contents are gone we can't tell them whats missing.No return address either so we don't know who sent it!!!
