I don't think there's many one here would disagree with that Les - However we're all told that the reason us scummy non-police people can get fined for doing 45 in a 40 is because Speeding is dangerous and it Kills.

However if you're a copper you can travel at 159 and it's perfectly safe because you're the "creme de la creme" of law enforcement.

We just need to know which one's true !

Thats a very good point Jasey, but we will never get a sensible answer from the judge concerned or the authorities.

Not a snowball's chance in hell of that being accepted as a defence.

Hutton d

I had a ZX12R until recently and its performance was also pretty electrifying too as you will know. You may be right most of the time when you say you can reach those speeds very quickly and back down again in safety under the right circumstances. As you say, it would a hell of a car which you do that with.

But would you really think it would be safe if the law allowed everyone to do that at any time and in any place they felt like?

You seem to be inferring that we just don't need any speed limits at all if you think that.

Huitton d,

Yes I agree with most of what you say, but with speedcams there will never be any allowance made for road conditions at the time. Until those are mainly binned and we get traffic police back to do the surveillance of drivers in a proper manner, we will always get "done" by numbers and the really bad cases such as drivers with no licence or insurance will get away with it.

I accept as I said that a burst up to high three figure speeds can be done relatively safely by a skilled rider or driver under suitable conditions, but as a point of principle and also the dangers from unskilled drivers trying it on, I think it just should not be done especially as it would be just for the selfish reason of doing just it for the hell of it.

Do like Corradoboy and find a private road or go on a track day where you can really enjoy it without risk to anyone else is best I reckon.

As an ex-Traffic officer I have to say that I do think it was wrong that he got off.

I don't have so much of a problem with the 159 on the M'way but the excess speed in the 30 is unforgiveable whatever time of day it was.

However I don't understand why you're slagging off the Police for. They decided it was wrong and charged him with the offences as you or I would be. Surely it's the court/law that is at fault for aquitting him! The Police couldn't have done anything more to get him convicted.....

The issue is indeed that he got off. I would need to go through the court case in detail but when old smiler had just got off I'm sure he said his boss was there backing him up and his defense was that of "I can drive like a complete **** cos I'm trained".

The courts agreed with this and let him go.

As stated in this thread - it'll be very interesting at the Next GB Rally and the old cops are out clocking the WRC champions doing 45 in a 40 and the WRC champs being told that being trained is no excuse for putting the lives of ordinary citizens at risk through their reckless and thoughtless behaviour !

Next time I get stopped for speeding or I see some copper lecturing on how speed kills I'll ask him about 86 in a 30 and see what he says !

I can't disagree with the fact that it makes the Police look bad.

Particuarly when they're clamping down on speeding so much these days and pissing alot of people off in the process.

I know it's not the same but does anyone know if he got disciplined by the Force? This does sometimes happen.

Pretty sure his boss was condoning his actions as those of a highly qualified individual going about his duties in the "normal" way.

I'm not trying to put words into his mouth - but that's what it all looked like at the time.

86 in a 30 is simply ridiculous - even the most rabid anti-police looney would think that ! Surely this can't be defended by anyone.

ps 159 on a Motorway is pretty ******* stupid too - I know I've been in a car at 140 on the M4 and the cars doing 70 looked like they were parked ! (Ps this was 20 odd years ago - the police caught us and told us to be more careful (once they'd finished admiring the Audi Quattro Coupe we were in)).

Like I say unless you're going to a job I don't really think you can justify it in anyway.

I doubt it Lynne, here in Wiltshire all cases used to be heard in Chippengam as that is where the safety camera people are, now they have been moved to Salisbury. Doesn't matter if you were caught in Swindon or wherever it is still heard in Salisbury. Maybe a similar situation up by you.
