I really can't believe that I am about to say this, but Pete has a good point. If AlanPPP had come on and said that he had done an ECU re-set and now the car idles badly and hesitates, then the first thing that I would suggest is that the MAF is dying but not dead yet and so not throwing a CEL, but on it's way out, and the ECU had learned to cope so it seemed to be running fine. But since it had been re-set, the ECU was having to re-learn around the dying MAF, so it was running badly. My money is on the MAF being on it's way out causing the engine probs - do a search on MAF and idling problems, it's well recognised that if re-setting the ECU mucks up the idle then it's a good sign that the MAF is on it's way out.
As for the gearbox, I have no idea whats up.
Edit - just noticed you have changed the air filter - are you 100% that the lid of the air-box is back on properly, it's quite hard to see the wee hooks at the bottom end. Did you loosen or remove anything else to lift the lid of the air box, it could be you have an air leak.
(2nd edit for spelling and punctuation!!)

Cheaper to check these than a new MAF Sensor - especially as its expensive on this MY!
hoskib, I can assure you one thing - you would be popped well and truly on your bum!! Take my word for it!!

Woah Woah Woah!
Who said anything about my car hesitsating??? And my idle is only dodgey when i first start it up after it's been standing for a while.Any other time it sits at a perfect 900 revs.
I will take a better look at the airbox and MAF etc and check all levels and connections again. Is there any other things i could do/clean out that could help? Boost solenoid maybe?

Hmm, imagined the bit about hesitating. I really don't think it's oil related though, the 10w40 oil should be fine if it decent quality, my '97 scoob seems to like 10w40 Motul 300V better than it likes the 15w50 stuff, seems quieter in the mornings.
You are on the right lines to check for loose connections, clean out the boost solenoid etc, possibly also the Idle control valve, which could obviously effect the idle !!!
I'd still read up on MAF problems since it seems to have popped up since the ECU reset. If it is O.K once the car is warm it sounds like it is only happening while the car is running open loop before the lambda warms up, although it'd take me a few minutes to think through the full implications of what that might suggest is up.

Fair point, failed temp sensor making the car use the warm running maps even when the engine is cold maybe ?

Well just been out and had a real good look around..All connections are ok...airbox is on tight.
The boost solenoid was clicking away with no accelerator pedal used when i first started the car up right..Then i disconected the MAF sensor plug and the car struggled away but never died so i reconected it and it went back to normal BUT the solenoid now only clicks when i tweak the throttle?! Is this right??
I will clean out the Solenoid and maybe do another ECU reset to see if it picks anything else up?

Disconnecting the MAF should result in an engine stalling - I think???
Saying it struggled on tells me that the ECU is using a substituted value and maybe has been earlier too??

I suggested the MAF at post #4 ......
Mind you, I have a reputation ... people DO jump to conclusions when I post, its part of the fun. They can't see when I am actually helping

Well Pete maybe if you answered in a different way instead of being sarcastic then maybe you would get a lot more respect as you seem to have a fair bit of knowledge.
Thanks everyone for the help
