I'm going to write the council and find out what the score is. Expect a reply in a couple of weeks.
Took me a while to work out who to write to, but I think I've found a good starting point on the website.

LoL We went to the beach last year at chapel six marshes, not too many people there and we were the last to leave,Well i took my grave diggers, round mouth shovel and started digging near the top end of the beach,an hour later and i was stood at the bottom of the hole with water around my feet,i am about 5'7 and the shovel at full stretch was just poking out the top when the wife made me stop and my mate pulled me out with shovel, kids thought it was great,it was a laugh at the time and still makes me grin.As we were the last to leave and it was getting dark we left it for the rising water table to flood it cos there was a couple of tons to put back in the hole and i did'nt fancy that.Next time we went you could still see the bloody great heap of sand where the hole had been. I'll make sure we get a piccy this year and hope the guy from the council as'nt around!!

I would have thought that sand callapse might be more of a problem than falling into it. 4 feet deep is quite an achievement......
But its only courtesy to fill it in when you finish I suppose ............ but whatever next.
Hole cameras on the beach......? Nanny state .......

4Ft is **** all, I used to dig em deeper than me and had do do a couple of steps tpo get out the bastid.. no one ever complained, in fact I was kida "da man" as we all used to jump into it once the tide started to come back in. No one ever injured themselves, no one ever drowned and no one ever complained.
P.s at 31 myself now and I still free wheel the shopping trolley down Safeways Isles.
The rubbing strips on the bottom of the shelves makes sure you dont wipe out too badly.

He will have been fulfilling some NL target for beach inspection and sand castle regulation I imagine.
I suppose it won't be long before they fence off the sea completely since it will not be considered safe to allow the general public anywhere near it!

I heard this on the news and remembered this thread. Terribly sad but letting a 3-year old into a 5 ft deep sand hole? Like an adult jumping into an 8 ft deep hole. Sad.

Anyway, we got to beach and we proceeded to do what most people do on the beach with young kids - dig holes and make sand castles.
So we dig and dig and dig and dig, until we have to make a secondary hole so that James could step down into the first one. When we'd finished, the hole was about 4ft deep.
Quick game of footy and making some sand castles and stuff, and a bloke from the Council comes up and says, "can I have a word". He basically said that our hole on the beach was a Health and Safety issue and asked that we fill it in.
He said, "a young child could fall in the whole and hurt themselves". I laughed, as I thought he was taking the pi55.
All credit to the gentleman from the council, he was always polite, but said that if I refused to fill in the hole, he would call the police
Anyway, the Mrs told me to fill the hole in to avoid any further aggravation, so that's what I did.
Has anyone else ever come across this, as I find it ridiculous that something that people have done for years and years, has suddenly become a h+s issue.
I'm tempted to go back in a few weeks time and dig an even bigger hole and then refuse to fill it in. It would be interesting to know what the police could do about it.

have you seen the news, a kiddy died on a beach today something to do with a hole
ive just recently been on holiday and my daughter fell into a hole that had been dug by someone else.it is very hard to see things like that on the beach
but it doesnt mean you are irresponsible if this happens.
it takes a few seconds for an accident to happen and unless you have your eyes fixed on your child every second of the day there will be more accidents.

Sorry but is doesn't take a second to dig a 5 ft hole......
I can remember taking our youngsters to the beach at that age. A nightmare watching them almost literally every second when they insisted on "paddling" and started to stray out a bit.......

tell me about it, its a nightmare, especially if the beach is crowded. ive let my daughter play with other kids a few feet from me, i wouldnt have known if there was a bigger hole than a 'safe' one.
most parent havnt got a clue, they treat the beach as a soft playground
5ft is a big hole though, but it could happen with a much smaller one

My point was not that the 3 yr old was in the hole, and you can certainly say why were they. But it was to highlight the selfishness of the first post, that when someone asked them to fill in what they'd done, they objected. With things like this happening, go ahead, dig the hole, I don't demand NL H&S checks that you all ridicule - but please don't then leave it for other people to sort themselves out.

Anyway, as I'd forgotton about this post, I did get a reply from the council saying that as a guide, and to avoid having to carry a tape measure on the beach, their general rule would be that any holes dug should approx. be as wide as they are deep

Apparently the father was stood right by the hole and saw it collapse in.
It appears that as fast as he cleared the sand it kept caving in again.
The little girl was reported to have been calling out for her mum
Horrendous, nightmare situation when you think about it.

At the end of the day 100s of millions of kids inc myself have dug deep holes on beaches all over the world. It's just a freak but very sad accident and should be taken as that.
I have no doubt though that some idiot somewhere will be looking into how to make beaches safer.
Hell ,why not go the whole hog and put safety barriers around all the cliffs, harbours etc that surround the UK as well.
