Ive heard a lot of bad things about Halifax from friends who've had experience with them.

Just threaten to change banks until they drop the charges, then change banks anyway.

Any banking company who use that ******* annoying tosser bloke as a basis for all their advertising deserves to be avoided! I wont ever be using Halifax.

I underpaid my minimum payment on a card this month, by £2. They wrote a threatening letter saying it was being referred to a debt-collection agency for the full balance of the credit. All over £2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a banking scam.....

it has been highlighted before...

they are not allowed to charge charges on charges, which is what they have done...

a swift letter of complaint, and a visit, would be in order...

oh and when you write, enclose an invoice for your proffesional services, detail time, costs etc..

The maximum you can be charged in one day with the halifax is 3x £30/£35 (depending on whether d/d was paid/unpaid) with a £28 maintenance charge chargable at the end of the next month.

I doubt you'll have been charged all three either as probably one will have already been dropped as a goodwill gesture, phone them up and ask for the exact details of what charges are due

I've written to them detailing the circumstances, my banking history and 'respectfully requesting' that they drop the pending charges under the circumstances. If the letter fails I shall then visit a branch and do as suggested and I WILL close the account if I have to.

Just out of curiosity, if you got 'charged' for not wearing a seatbelt, would you write to the police/courts requesting you shouldn't pay it?

Just wondering, kinda the same is it not?

Probably I stated in post 1 that I accept I made an error but life is about give and take and I've been quite reasonable over the years when the bank has f-up so I expect the same in return.

I disputed my parking ticket and after 10+ letters and 6 months they caved and gave up

I had the same thing the other day with my Barclaycard. Pay it early every month and the one time I pay one day late I receive my next statement to find a late payment and admin charge.

I gave them a quick call and they reversed it without me really having to ask them to. A lot of the banks run automated systems as you know. It's their computer systems that are working to the set parameters I guess and 9/10 they will simply reverse the charges if asked.

I bet you wont have a problem here Saxo.

For over 10 years I have had my current account through the Halifax. Pretty much every pound that has been earned by me has gone through that account and I've paid all my wages, etc into it for years and years.

In all this time I've been the 'model' customer causing no problems for the bank and always meeting my obligations. Finally this month I slip up for the first time and allow a few sneaky direct debits I'd forgotten about to take me around £75 over my agreed overdraft limit. I got sent a total of 4 letters, one for each transaction (3 of them), and an 'overdraft charge' letter. The overdraft charge is £28 and each letter has a £30 charge. No physical letter was sent as I set up paperless banking yet I'm being charged an 'admin fee' of £30 per letter which is per item all of which is within about the last 24 working hours. In all I'm looking at charges of around £120!!!

So despite being 100% the model customer for 10 years, paying in all my money into the account, etc, etc and putting up with their poxy mail (letters that they don't charge me for) offering me this that and the next thing they screw me for £120 quicker than you can say, 'sh*t I've gone over my o/d limit'

LOL <shakes head> the sad thing is when I return my o/d to zero and end my relationship with them (which WILL happen) nobody will either notice or care

BTW, I agree they are within their rights to charge me BUT 4x £30 in 24 hours is just taking the p!ss and it makes my financial circumstances a whole lot worse. Its like saying this, 'Oh I see you've finally after all this time had a difficult month, don't worry we understand at the Halifax that these things happen and will gladly make it 100 times worse and charge you massive fees. Have a nice day'
Don't waste your time with complaining to the local people or your account manager - spend ten minutes on the net finding two things. One is the naming convention used in the Halifax for emails. Second is the name of the Chairman of the Board and the Head of Marketing.

Then write a carefully constructed letter to the Times on lack of Customer Service in Banks; specifically quoting your circumstances as detailed above.

Send a copy of that to the two individuals you identified at the Halifax. (Don't bother sending it to the Times, it probably wont get published)

Sit back and wait for the calls/letters etc.

Transfer your account.

Anything else is a waste of time, but this does work - at least it gives you some satisfaction in that you know somebody in the Halifax is going to have to explain to the board why they are being slated in public.

Regards

Me and my husband have had the same probs with Halifax, he cancelled a direct debit 1 year ago, on his statements each month it had disappered until this year he went to the bank to ask how he seemed to have less money still each month and when everything come up on the screen it was still being paid out, they hadn't cancelled it at all so we had been paying a company for one year for no reason!!! He has had the same letters with charges, charged about £150 within 24hrs it is absolutely ridiculous, I agree it has went down hill, I set up a mini cash ISA in March with them, the amount of ID i got asked for was unbelieveable, funnily enough I wanted to close that account last week so they said well we need 48 hrs notice, I said no I want the cash now, but I had to wait 48hrs, I went back before the 48hrs was up and got told I could withdraw up to £1200 in cash in one day, so I said right I'll have the £1200 and come back for the rest, I went in today and stood and waited half a hour (only had 1 hour on the car park, and I wanted to do other things), I eventually got to the desk only to be asked for loads of ID again, I turned round in the end coz I was so pi$$ed off and said if I was to jump on the back of a lorry and come in to the country with a turban on my head I would have all the benefits going, a nice big house, a bank account within 5 minutes etc, the woman didn't look to pleased but it's true.

I'm with Barclays and can't say I've really had an issues with them, but then I'm sure there's enough stories out there to say how bad they are.

I find it funny people wouldn't bank with Halifax because of that guy in their adverts. I completely agree with you though, wouldn't get my business just because of that!!

Perhaps they'll employ fluffy and that other stupid bird for their adverts and pi55 us off even more!!!
