....and gone will be that lovely flat four burble i presume with equal length headers on the new 2.5 ltr STI?

Pictures look ok of the new model in Auto express yesterday. Not as ugly i i thought it might look...quite agressive looking.

I far as i am aware Japanese Regs prohibit the release of cars with more than 276bhp in Japan which is why all the these rally hybrids, skylines, 350z and NSX etc only have that figure or there abouts quoted for engine outputs.
I will stand to be corrected but that is what I have always been led to believe.
If they were to bring out the 2.5l STI engine then it would just me more Torquey and less revvy to stay under the regulation limits.

please stand and be corrected!

The gentlemans agreement has lapsed and consequently we are most likely going to get higher powered variants before too long

Quoted here from some litriture

"The 22B, a WRC Impreza look-alike, contains some very elaborate parts in both its suspension, transmission and engine internals (a one piece steel crankshaft for instance). The car's output is only limited by Japanese regulations which set the maximum engine output of any Japanese car to 280 Bhp"

Oh ok well good stuff then Roll on the 2.5s

Not that I could afford one anyway as I just bought an MY03STI and I don't think changing anytime soon is realistic

There is no regulation. It's an agreement, as far as horse power goes. However, with bigger horse power, on higher octain petrol, generally means bigger emission level, and there is a regulation on that.

So, technically, if they can get a cleaner engine, with higher output, they could... they just haven't done so. I guess with the increasingly popular tuning companies in Japan, manufactuers can leave the making of higher power monsters to the tuners. Everyone knows what a RB26DETT is capable of producing, and how limited it is made

Read this in EVO magazine a while back. The Japanese Manufacturers are no longer having to say "Yes sir, the power output is 276BHP WINK WINK"

That agreement lapsed since last June. In fact, the car that has the highest rated power in Japan is the Honda Legend (300ps).

IIRC you'll get far better peformance from a 2.0ltr JDM then fitting a 2.5Ltr USDM bottom end. Than from the full 2.5Ltr USDM lump they'll be fitting.

But then problems with changing engine number/spec and Insurance etc etc Which made me think

Better to by the 2.5Ltr version replace heads n Cams for a 2.0ltr ones sports Cat, Remap and Bobs your Uncle. a very nice Car with loads of Torque

IMHO, I'd be keeping the V6 for the time being - unmolested classics will be worth keeping hold of.
And yes, the MY99 is a better car than the MY00 - who gives a **** about having map-lights?

The ECU was better on the MY99. Fact.

I would also asy (as I've said before) - this new Subaru is as butt-ugly as the older "facelifts".

The more Subaru mess with a poor styling design (IMHO), the less rate my Classic depreciates!!!

Still it will be interesting to see what any new models look like

I have been on a different planet for the last 3 months (no Scoobynet, Autoexpress, nothing). And what do I see when I get back? – well, I am going back there! I mean, what is it that Subaru are trying to do to the Impreza?! Kill it? Sure the headlights are better, but that Nissan X-Trail nose-job on the grill!! Or is it a ploy to help sell the current version, and then bring the '07 version later. Remember their cynical statement on the old Bug-Eye? " We made lights so, that no one would steal car!" Yeh right, and no one buy either. If Hari Kari is still practiced in Japan, the chief stylist should show honour.

Great shame what they are doing to this beautiful Machine.

They never actually confirmed its going to have a 2.5ltr engine, they speculated from their souce that it "may" have a 2.5ltr engine and the wrx "may" also have a power increase, though the 2ltr twin scroll will be a better option over the 2.5

From the Litchfield site......
"Subaru’s ubiquitous 2.5lite (EJ257) block first appeared in the 300bhp US STI then later in the Forester XT/STI and soon in new 226/276bhp European models. The EJ257 has been a necessary development for Subaru as they expand in world markets and have to tackle increasingly tough emission levels such as the enforced EuroIV emission standards in January’06. This 2.5 engine has allowed Subaru to meet these requirements whilst maintaining their high performance philosophy."

So i would guess that the WRX has the 226hp version and the STi the 276hp version of the EJ257

So... the WRX gets an extra 4 bhp, and the STI gets 15. Impressive stuff from an extra 25% displacement

Get that free PPP while you still can

I imagine the tuning potential for non emission caring tuners will be considerable (depending on turbo type etc)

The Autocar pictures look the same as Auto Express so it's reasonable to say that it's the real thing.

I must admit, I don't mind the front [flame suit on] in a Seat kind of way (or even Suzuki Baleno ), but those chavy rear lights would have to go. They look like a direct replacement for the 03-05 units so easy to swap. I think the word Grif's looking for is Zapitina'd
