I was 25 when I bought mine so my mid-life crisis was early. They were modern then though. Now they look a little dated but a good one (5.4GTS) will still give you wood at the thought of ownership. (Another reason for your wife to agree)
Also the roads were camera-less and a long journey at fast speeds was an absolute pleasure. I'm not sure they would be now, in the UK anyway, which wouldn't apply to you in any case would it.

Tough call.....
I bought a Renault 25 GTS from auction a few years back for £147. Ran it for 12 months, and then took it for MOT. It passed. Clutch went on it, which cost a fair few quid to sort out but that was about it. Used it to race arounds fields with when I changed job and got a car. Superb value for money as I did a 75mile round trip in quite often.
However, I think my current best car has got to be my Astray 1.4 Swing. I bought it in April 2004 for £500 at auction with 12 months MOT. It's just about to turn 30k since I bought it, and it's cost me one front tyre. I've been to Leeds and back in it most days, and travelled down to Reading when not doing that.

Oh yeah, and it only cost £90 a year to insure fully comp.
Wish i'd kept it now.

Apart from my current Octavia vRS..
a 1970 Vitesse 2-litre MkII convertible. Full SAH manifold and system, Konis, balanced bottom end, SAH cam, overdrive gearbox, 3.27 GT6 diff, 1.75" SU carbs, etc.
It would do over 50 in first gear.

In 14 years of motoring I haven't had that many cars but defo a couple of real **** burgers 
For all round everything good and zero problems mine would have to be a MK 2 Golf 1.6 Ryder
Drove it out of the showroom with 13 miles on the clock - sold it 2 years later with 120k

Most rewarding was my 1993 nova SRi.. had it resprayed, retrimmed the interior myself in black leather and blue alcantara.
Rock solid suspension, big brakes, and was low enough to scrape on cats eyes.
Handling wise would leave many more powerful/bigger cars for dust in the twisties.
For fun factor, and the satisfaction I had building it was fantastic. Sadly was no longer practical and like a muppet I sold it.

The car I enjoyed the most was my last car, a Mk2 Honda CRX 1.6 16v (non-VTEC).
Great power to weight ratio, 130bhp in a car weighting around 950kg.
The 16v engine was good in low revs and pulled like a train after 4000rpm.
The handling was excellent as standard (better than my mk2 Golf GTI with adjustable suspension)
Good looks, despite being a 14 year old car.
No PAS steering, giving great feedback (and giving my arms a workout when parking in tight spaces)
Nimble and quick around town, and planted when travelling at speed on the motorway.
I would get one again, if I could find one with PAS (JDMs have it as standard)

My favourite was my '91 renault 5 GT turbo in white.
Had it chipped to 160bhp - only weighed around a ton - felt like a rocket.
Felt quicker than my previous evo with 320bhp - but of cause it wasn't.
Great car - until the engine and then the car caught fire in a petrol station.
Would still love another one - belting car.

205GL 1.1. First car, had it nearly 4 years and 30k miles. Did 50mpg, depreciated by <£100/year when I owned it. The only money I ever had to spend on it was £80 on a new heater fan and £40 on a new battery. Other than that, petrol plus oil, filter and wiper blades was about it - I never even changed a tyre on it! Carburetorred engine, which with a K&N just kept revving without breaking (even allowing for speedo error I wrung it out to about 8000rpm on occassions!), fun handling which you could exploit at low(ish) safe speeds.
Everything I've owned since has been faster, nicer etc, but nothing so cheap and in some ways, not so much fun. Perhaps it's true that you always look back on your first fondly

Honda legend 3.2 93 saloon white all standard polished alloys 95k miles:excellent to drive, all the toys,luxurious,powerful(enough to get you in and out of trouble) never missed a beat,nothing failed in 20k miles,fuel consumption was ok considering size (better than a scooby),only complaint is the lack of cornering agility at speed.

Honda crx mk1 1.6i dohc 87 (facelift model) mugen exhaust hks filter 90k miles:fast,decent fuel economy (when not booting it)good looking,good handling,girlies liked it,easy to park (agree with above about pas),excellent reliability,titchy back seats meant no foker would try poncing a lift from you,only complaint was rust although mine was 95% mint.

STi 5 4d cool grey HKS exhaust 18" prodrive alloys p1 lip:What can I say...# 1 in every way,fuel economy,insurance,servicing is bearable with looks,performance and drivability like this but.......the cost of an engine at 40k milkes fsh puts this below the crx in my books.

Had swaymar heads bottom end build by Burton Engineering
full janspeed and the X pack triple webbers
owned for 10 years of continuos abuse and general tomfoolery
only ever had to replace consumables like Tyres brakes etc and Clutch's
A proper car unlike my scoob that fell to bits if you even thought about spanking it
Ford must have known how these cars would be driven and built then to take it.
Pay attention Subaru
Had swaymar heads bottom end build by Burton Engineering

hence it had to have rear tyres once a month
but 205/60/13's don't cost **** all
dumbest thing i ever did was sell it
should have outed my scoob before i did rather than keep spunking money on gearboxes and turbos
I'm actually looking for another Capri but its got to be a 3.0S

Fave car was my modded 02 Scooby - Fast, Fun, Attention Grabbing Ego Booster ( Great choice of car after a divorce!)
Best bargain car was an old Capri on Irish plates that cost me 15quid & and old car stereo. Ran it for 10months untill the tax & test ran out then sold it for 60 quid!
Best Ever all round car has to be the car which replaced the scoob:

I have a few favourites but it's hard to say which was my number one because they all have their highs and lows.
For top spot it would have to be a toss up between a H plate pulsar GTi-R or my old mark 1 Golf GTi. The mk1 gti was my first 'performance' car over 10 years ago and I have fond memories of sliding it about and it being very predicatble. I actually owned (as in on the logbook) the car 3 times over many years as I'd sold it to the same friend twice! lol Right little sh*t at times though (crappy electrics) but was good fun. The GTi-R (one of 4 gti-r's I've owned!) was a great car and as I said I've had 4 of them but it's amazing how the same make/model can be so different. I have fond memories and it never let me down and I even kept it tucked away in my garage when I bout a wrx 3 years ago because I couldn't bear to sell it. At over 2 years ownership (when I sold it) it's still the longest I've kept a car.
But if I had to pick 1 of the cars I've owned to keep from now on it'd be my R32 GTR skyline. Very complete car, excellent driving position, stonking performance and jap reliability. Although the evo is a nice car, arggh too hard.
Favourite bike.. TZR 125, went everywhere, anytime (even when the headlight used to turn off mid corner). Purely for memories, again I've had a few bikes.. r6, r1's etc and currently have a zx-10r (which is pretty amazing even compared to an r1) but the old tzr days will never be bettered. Makes me laugh thinking back to connecting the powervalve and litterally being staggered at the performance.
