Nice vid mate....................Rolling road??? If not I make it about 16.5 to an indicated 100mph which would mean a true speed of about 92-93mph giving a 0-100 time of about 18.5 secs!!! hardly the stuff of super cars eh?

Until you try a PD Diesel you have no idea. I tested the Chav Type R and it was just tedious having to stretch the performance out of the car all the time. So end up getting much better performance from the Fabia than I would the CTR in real world driving. And it was £5000 more money with a similar spec.

I have a CTR now because after three scoobs and an Evo v I wanted something a little more sensible but still quick, and if you knew anything at all about cars you'd know how few cars like that, that are available! And there wouldn't be one diesel makes the second list, never mind the first!! I think the fact that I've owned performance cars for over 25 years now would make me quite a good judge, and as of today the diesel that can be counted as a performance car has yet to be built.

It's starting to speak for itself already - how many Scoobynet members have posted here that they've ditched the Scoob and replaced it with a vRS.

Real world driving to me means effortless. I can roll along at slow speeds in traffic with no hassle. I can overtake at 70 in 6th gear and still feel like I've got some go in it. Driving is a pleasure not a chore. Don't get me wrong a thrash in the scooby is great fun, just not every day.

The 0-60 times for the fabia aren't sparkling for two reasons, low revving oil burner and 6 speed box. That means you have to get it out of 1st very quickly and then second pretty quickly too but the immense torque just pulls and pulls.

There are one or two members over at Briskoda reporting some pretty pleasing results against CTR's and Clio 182's with a mapped Fabia.

Fair comment mate. Seems to me you really mean, you're bored with driving, so I'll get the pipe and slippers out! along with the diesel and call it a day!!! For me after 31 years of driving I still find it an absolute delight!! 5 mins from most major towns, and, the roads are mostly traffic and camera free! and still worth that little bit of extra effort to get the most out of my car.

30 - 60 or 40 - 80 thats where the PD130 does the damage. Like I said it's the combination of 6 speed and low redline that kills the off the mark speed.

The oil burners are never going to be scorching hot hatches. You are so missing the point of what we are talking about if all you are interested in is saying they are slow and boring. Sometimes its not about being able to beat every car you meet on the road. Its about the overall package of being able to still enjoy driving without thinking there goes another few grand.........

I wouldn't compare a Standard Fabia vRS to a CTR, they are in 2 different classes. The CTR is always going to be more hardcore because its got to be kept on the boil, I should know, I've owned 3 different Honda VTEC engined cars.

The Fabia offers a different driving experience which can still put a smile on your face without crying about the cost. It really is as simple as that. I would urge people to try one for an afternoon and make up your own minds. There is a reason why so many current vRS owners are ex-impreza owners.

After scoobs and evo's I'm not crying about the cost of owning the CTR!! I just can't get to grips with the fact that just because a car can pull billy smarts circus up rigate hill it makes it a performance car??? A performance car is about handling, braking, steering, as well as performance. While diesel's have a feckin big lump hanging over the front wheels they can never be classed as performance cars no matter how good their "performance" is!!! Perhaps in years to come as petrol gets so expensive that it becomes a luxury item! then oil burners will begin to make sense, until then long live 98 octane burners.

Thanks for all your replies. For me that's it!! I've said all I need or wish to say on the subject. Doubtless this debate would go on ad infinitum, if you like me have made up your minds on your chosen fuel then I respect your opinion, for me unless I hit rock bottom! then I'm afraid diesel will not have the benefit of my sponsorship.

Well I'll add my bit.

I've done the Scoob thing but needed something a bit more comfortable for my wife so went down the route of the V6 repmobiles to start with and also tried an Alfa 156 selespeed. None really struck me.

I bought the Fabia for my wife and was frankly shocked by how good it was to drive, how easy it was to overtake, how powerful it felt at normal driving speeds and how economical it was. Just after buying the Fabia as a second car I was offered my Cousins CTR as he was upgrading to a Golf R32, I ran it for a week, now I did enjoy the odd screaming run in it but for 90% of my drive to work it felt gutless and harsh. The one thing about the CTR I will say it's got the best gearbox I have ever used in a road car.

If I didn't need a bigger car I would have bought another Fabia for myself but went for the next step up and bought an Octavia TDi Elegance. Currently the Octavia is running around 140bhp and 200lbft @ 1900rpm, not earth shattering but feels strong enough and can surge by slower traffic if required. Just done a run to skeg from notts, 160 mile round trip and averaged 62mpg.

With the new generation diesels coming out we should be looking at 160bhp and 260lbft from the 2.0litre engines being common place by 2006/2007.
Can't ever see me going back to petrol for a road car again.

Now for a track day or weekend toy, thats another matter.

No not just yet mate.

The thing that's changed is the UK's roads not me. Looking at the trip computer the other day and I had done 270miles since fill up and my average speed was 37mph.

I do a lot of driving and a highly strung performance car is more of a hassle on UK roads, for me, to be honest.
I think a lot of people are finding the power delivery of modern TDi's really suite the UK's congested road network and that's before we start on speed camera's. I fully intend to get a track day car but can't see the point of putting up with the downsides of owning something like a CTR that I might be able to give it a blast for a few minutes a week.

If we ever get back to clear roads that dont have a Gatso or Camera Van round every corner then I may reconsider. Somehow I just know the congestion will get worse and more and more speed traps will be put into use.

No problem matey!! But my CTR will happily peedle along in traffic all day without a hiccup!! It doesn't matter what car you drive, you will never be able to make full use in a town/city driving situation. That's why I can't see that it matters if you are in diesel or a petrol? But when the opportunity does present itself I know where I'd rather be. All this "real world" crap is a front for people to justify to themselves that they have made the right decision!!!

The WHOLE POINT is that you can put your foot down in first gear up to say, 30mph and feel like you are speeding...we've got a Fab vRS and also a Scoob. Diesels mean that you can get speed thrills without necessarily breaking loads of speed limits. I aren't bothered how fast I go, as long as I've got the kick in the back...

It's all about power delivery - we have a section of road which turns from 40mph to a national. In the Scoob I'm having to drop to 2nd, yet in the Skoda 4th gear is equally impressive.

The only thing stopping me buying a second Fabia is cos I really like being able to boot the Scoob in the wet - tried it with the brand new Fabia on the first day and nearly stuck it into a hedge!! I can't believe some people who chip the Fabia without altering the handling - bloody lethal!!

To each their own, but I only feel you can comment if you've driven all the cars in question. Would I have a CTR tomorrow? Yes of course. 330d Beemer? Yes. Another Scoob? mmmm that is the question

I love cars and feel we really need to get away from the 'them and us' mentality - which is one of the reasons I don't go on Briskoda.

I own a remapped Ibiza Cupra 160, its was putting out a 'claimed' 200bhp on the rollers. Either way it has has enough power and torque to see off a WRX from a rolling start on a couple of occasions, as well as being able to stick with my friend's R32 up to about 90 when we both backed off. The AP Racing 312mm brakes are also quite impressive and the handling is in a different league to the Fabia vRS and Ibiza FR. Down side is that its that the £15.500 is quite steep by comparison (although dealers are offering good discounts), and mpg isnt as good as I am averaging 40-45mpg compared to 50-55 in the Fabia. The bigger turbo also has a bit more lag than the 130pd.
