Every time the car corners it feels as if the rear end wants to come around, I know you say this is part the the "passive" rear sterring - but it just feels plain odd, and dangerous.

I would like to drive another GTi 6 to see how if feels along side yours.

First question I asked on GTi-6 forum as it did feel weird.

That thing can fly round corners, handling is spot on, if a little different to conventional (weel, no passive rear steered cars). Feels like it's coming out - it's not, its the passive rear steer pivoting, rear wheels turn in a little too thus giving the weird feeling.

Keep it planted, it's all good.

...I think the problems are connected.

When you brake hard the rear goes light and moves around, just as it does when you are cornering withough any power.

The braking problem feels to me as though it's pulling from the front rather than pushing from the rear though.

Perhaps there are 2 concurrent problems combining to make 1 big ****??

You said you had the tracking done? Just that? As thats only the toe in, or did you have a full laser alignment of camber, caster etc done as well. You might find your camber is well fooked, that would defo cause it to pull under braking............

But wouldn't it pull to one side, everytime??

when I say pull I mean PULL as though something is ripping the car offline.

What has been said on 306GTi forum about it?

I would be steering towards a brake piston not performing or something like that? get them wheels off and have as look at the pads. I know you said they have been checked but I never believe it till i see it myself. A knackered piston will show its as one pad will be wearing and the other not.

If not that then while the car is jacked up lets have a look at all the componants in that area ARB, drive shaft, wishbones, check that all the bolts are done up and nothing looks a miss. Do it both sides.

I can sympathise. Booked mine in yesterday to have the front and rear pads changed. Drove it out at 6pm (all gone home), touch the brakes, noise from rear audible at low speeds. I'm sure the brakes aren't as good as they were. Told wife. This morning she texts me "the car makes a noise like when you are cutting metal with your angle grinder" Now just texted me "Something fell off, so I picked it up. Noise has stopped now." I phoned her, she described it, sounds like a brakepad shim And that's a routine service on a 2-yr-old car.

Nah, if the camber was fooked it would more than likely vary depending on the road you were on. When my GTR was running over 2 degrees of negative camber each side it would do exactly that and sometimes go right and sometimes left, depending on camber of the road and its condition, tramlines etc............

I would be bloody pissed off if the dealer, the people that are supposed to be the experts, cant find the problem that is quite obviously there and then they tried to charge me for it. I would tell them to stick there money once i had obviously just nipped out to my car to fetch my cheque book.

Was this on your Impreza..? Before I picked up my MY00, Subaru fitted a new set of front pads for me. All was fine until the wife was driving me around in it when I could hear this awful grinding noise from the front. I thought she'd broken my new car, but alas it was just the spring widget-wotsit which sits on top of the 4-pots to stop the pads making a break for freedom. I guess the mechanic just hadn't seated it correctly.

Asumming it does this on a normal, flat road surface, rather than the worn out cr*p we normally get to drive on.

Does it have non-standard alloys with different offset?
Have the lower suspension bushes and mountings been checked out?

It's interesting (from a distant 3rd party POV) to read that it happens in either direction.

Does the car have ABS? Could that be playing up?

I second the nomination above: Take one of the senior techs out in the car on a deserted car park or similar and show them what happens.

J.

personally I'd reckon it was related to the rear suspension.

Forget taking it to any of the main dealers to get it fixed, if it was me I'd count myself lucky for only being charged £108... If it's not in their workshop manual or fault tree chart- forget it.

Pad material problem?? More a stab in the dark, but maybe they're behaving differently on different sides when they heat up???
Flexi hoses expanding (assuming they haven't been replaced with braided items)
