We have 4 wheelie bins where I live, black for normal waste, silver for tins, cardboard etc to be recycled, green for paper and brown for garden waste (which has to be paid for). The black bin is emptied one week and the silver the next. If you have your bin lid sticking up a tiny bit they wont empty it - health and safety - and as for collecting bags left at the side of the bins, forget it!

I used to get this with Bristol City council at my old house. The service got worse and worse, and we had to take our bins to "collection points" that got further and further away so the binmen didn't tire their little legs. They even gave my wheelie bin a "parking ticket" once!

We had to take our bins to the end of a lane on the morning of the collection so we'd do that then go to work. I came home one day and found all the bins that were still at the end of the lane had notices stuck to them saying that we were not to leave them by the side of the road after they had been emptied and if we did then they would "tow" our wheelie bin!

Obviously I phoned them and told them:

a) I had no intention of waiting around or taking time off work on the off-chance the binmen would come just so I could retrieve my bin the instant it had been emptied.
b) if they did confiscate my wheelie bin then next week's rubbish would be tipped in the middle of the road!

Needless to say they decided not to enforce that loony rule!

I see that this new "one bin per household" thing has come at the same time they have made fly tipping punishable with up to 5 yrs in the clink!

So expect pikeys to be allowed to continue dumping, whilst law abiding people with large families will be imprisoned for "fly tipping" their refuse sacks next to their wheelie bins!

Cool, let bury it all then.

It really is daft... where do they think the rubbish that they refuse to collect will go? It will just build up week on week or be dumped all over the place!

Another perspective on recycling.

Your cite seems to be suggesting we should recycle paper as to not do so causes global warming - something that is far from widely accepted as a genuine phenomenon anyway, especially as 20 years ago the green nuts were telling us the world was cooling and we were heading for another ice age.

Not just talking about paper - cans & plastic.

Personally I dont care too much....I just won't be able to shut my bin if I dont do it

I have no idea why! My bin was only open a fraction and they didnt empty it. We got leaftets round just after this was put in place and it was quoted for health and safety reasons. Surely it is more of a health and safety issue to have rubbish in your bin for 4 weeks?

They have a blue and green bin thing here in Toronto, so you're meant to recycle things.

The joke is, the stuff gets put in the same trucks as usual waste and is separated at the depot.

What's the point in me wasting my time, working out what type of plastic this container is, when they would do this at the depot?

My separating the waste is taking the job of someone who can do it for me I don't get paid to do it, and I can't really be bothered to do it.

I would guess that recycling plants still sift the waste to remove items people have put in the wrong bins, so what is the point in us doing it?

The above is one of the reasons why I don't recycle. If I was paid to do it, ah, then I might, just might, consider doing it, apart from that, I've never been given a good enough reason to do it.

Comments from hippies going on about "Preserving our planet for the next generation" don't do anything. I like the theory of Gaia (Mainly from "Edge of Darkness") whereby the earth will protect itself from Man, black flowers will grow upon the face of the earth, melting the ice caps, flooding the land, killing man, and then the world will start again.

If that's the case, then mother nature will probably win and wipe us all out, so why bother.

That or we'll simply leave this planet and go and start on another one

Our local council started this loony idea of "if the bin lid is up a bit, the binmen will take out the item on top and leave it beside the road," until it was pointed out to them that this would actually constitute fly tipping.............:, and we've heard not a lot about it since.

Wokingham are superb....we put out 8-10 bags a week...ALWAYS gone by 7 am...i have NEVER seen the binmen!

Recently had probs with foxes so asked the council if we could use a wheelie bin (they arent used round here)...they said fine so we got a monster bin that makes it easy to get the bags from the garage to end of the drive...10/10!

they also take garden stuff without question (although grass clippings get chucked over the fence into the field behind the house )

Our Council are pretty lenient, they will take bags left our next to the wheely bin. They give free green sacks for garden rubbish [but you can use black ones too] and they are collected fortnightly. We were given a green box [currently being used as toy box for the dog] which one week you put bottles in and the next week - newspapers.

8 tinnies on top of the bin at Chrimbo ensures nothing is ever left behind.
(They even went & collected it when I forgot to put it out !)

The kinda gets my goat. You have to bribe them to do the job they are being paid for. I would consider a "tip" at Xmas for the binmen if they had provided a service above my expectations, but not sure why I should when they struggle to provide the basic service that I am paying for.

Would you tip a car mechanic if they left greasy finger prints over the upholstery? Do you normally give your doctor £10 before you see him to make sure he diagnoses you correctly?

Are the tinnies payment in advance or arrears ? Or because it works ?
If £8 saves me one trip to the tip then they've paid for themselves.

I live in Northants (ths home of the scamera) and we have finally got wheeliebins 2 off one for garden rubbish and one for domestic + recycling tubs - 2 off for paper and the other for cans and bottles

Bin men will only take the wheeliebin and not bags of mixed domestic rubbish.

they will take 'bags' of cans or paper if clearly marked up.

We now recycle and rarely have more than a wheeliebin full, howevber a second child is imminant (tomorrow according to the midwife) so this may change.

I have heard of neighbours hiding domestic rubbish in the garden waste bin!

I suggest you take your excess down to the local council office and put it in their bins

Alternatively, (and this HAS been done) gift wrap your rubbish, leave it on the back seat of your car with the window open.
I live in the area, and have the mandatory three recycling boxes as well as the bin (I've got a large one, 'cos there's a big household). Can't see the problem, to be honest - I never manage to fill the wheely bin, and they're entirely coomodating about taking two binloads of garden refuse every few weeks. The recycling thing is scary though, because you soon realise just how many bottles and plastic containers you get through.

In Barnet we have a recycle bin and a green bin for all garden cuttings. It's not hard to sort your waste out.

Regards the OP, I have to agree with the council. Some of our neighbours put out shed loads of waste outside their bins each week yet we pay the same bloody council tax. Why should we subsidise them? Some are so lazy they they leave old tvs, microwaves etc next to the bin thinking it's the council's job to pick them up.

This is one of my bugbears. Products have far too much damn packing around them. It's totally unecessary!

It's worth looking at waste disposal units for food. Any uncooked veg goes in the compost bin, everything else goes down the grinder, stops things getting smelly!

They've been doing this in Germany for over ten years - and you're fined if they find stuff they shouldn't. But that's Germany for you.

Around here it's the main bin emptied every other week only, and no extras taken. The other week in two they take garden waste (also must be in a wheelie bin). One week in two they take away the recyclable stuff.
