Trust me, I'm no stranger to crappy dash boards having owned 3 205GTIs in various states of tune/dis-repair/abused (delete as appropriate) its just if I'm spending a fair whack of cash on a car, I like everything just so. Never driven either so I'd probably be convinced otherwise after a test but although not brillant or well built, I do like the reasonably modern look of the Impreza dash.
I have been ruling out the EVO1 becuase it doesn't have the posh alcantara wing backed seats. Don't know much about the differences between the two though.

The STi I drove was a big disappointment. Soggy steering, relatively little driver feedback and not as fast as I expected. I'll stick with my 14 year old Italian rustbucket thanks.

hi there, i,d go for the cossie any day, had a scoob and i could not keep up with my mates escort(stage 3 ) also handles very well and you don,t see that many of them

If you want one to match or better an STi - get a large turbo one.
Small turbo versions are limited to max 280-290bhp on the EECIV ecu.
All Esc Cos's were manufactured in Germany, so don't suffer rust problems like other Cossies did, but of course if maintained properly, but like any car that isn't looked after inc an STi you can get rust.
An Esc Cos will hold it's price better than an STi.
Mods are cheaper to do on an Esc Cos for big power.
Handling doesn't change from 70mph to 150mph+ it remains positive and the same, unlike a lot of Scoobs that go light on the steering over a ton.
Avoid Motorsport ones (they are homologation ones) can be identified by having no sunroof or full electrics.
History of Esc Cos can be found HERE

i have an sti type R(standard) and my brother in law has an escort cossie(330 conversion) that i borrow quite often, to be honest there is nothing in it in the twisties, the cossie is a very good handling car with a few handling updates.
both fantastic drivers cars in there own right and deserve praise for the fun you can have driving them

hey Lynne, i never said it was reliable though, this afternoon we had to disconnect the wiring loom and clean out the plug connector as it had cold starting probs.
to be fair it is a 12 year old car though
