John our experience with the JDM 6MT in the rally group N cars (produce around 400ftlbs) is that synchros wear out after 3 events, which is very good for a rally car. But one thing u might consider is billet selector forks with bronze pads, we get them from an Argentinian company that campaigns on the PWRC (Cordoba Rally Team / Barattero - Ligato, Pozzo, Beltran)

<bit'o news?>Check out the new synchros on 4th, 5th and 6th JDM 6 speeders - carbon! Dunno if they'll be more robust or not of course, but sound good (bling in your box?).

A friend of mine bought an Sti Jap V7 box.prop/shifter/crossmember/rear diff on a pallet delivered to his door for £1380 inc everything 4 months ago having blown his gearbox getting the car onto his trailer!
His 2.2 engine holed No 3 cylinder the following day on the first hill climb run.....

Repair is a little expensive because of the cost of the (new) parts, labour is very reasonable. I cannot buy a new box for near to this price to my knowledge. If I bought second hand I would have no idea as to its condition. I could patch mine up cheaply, repairing just things that have caused trouble, but that is a bit pointless IMHO.
