Word of warning for SN readers at work

I do not however use it onduty other than in emergencies or if i need to contact anyone work related.
I suspected you wouldn't be able to receive calls on a shout, I was more thinking about when you spend a gazzilion hours doing paperwork back in the station. Point taken though.

Jaydee5,
I think my confusion comes from this to be honest,
'If I have overstepped the mark throughout the day by spending more than my 36mins lunch break on SN...so be it. But I have a mahoosive amount of time spent at home, in my supposedly own time, which i am suppose to claim back as Time Off In Lieu doing the work that i'm supposed to get done in the office. And for a variety of reasons this doesn't get done....so please don't start giving me a lecture in time management '
Call me whacky but you seem to be saying that you spend too much time on the internet and don't get your work done but then end up doing it at home in your own time?!? Why not just leave off the internet and get the work done at work in their time? As an employer i think any case against you would be strengthened by this statement. Not a dig just think you need to look at what you write in a balanced way before placing it. Especially as it seems you then try to claim that time back from work!?!
Seem to be hitting my head against a brick wall here, it's obviously the norm now in local authority/industry for employers to pay employee's wages and those employee's spend their time not doing the work they are paid for. Not everyone obviously but i seem to sense a good amount of those on here do. And we wonder why as a country we're slipping behind the competition?

Jerome,
I'm in a privileged position where i am that a good amount of paperwork is done by supervision and scene commanders leaving me free to do the job in hand. The same applies though still with the phone, not used unless emergency or work contact, just the way i am!

Chris..if i met you in a pub and bought you a pint, i would give you the time and the energy to explain my pattern of work and the expectations that my employer has of me.
I obviously don't have the skills to put this information in writing, hence the confusion.
Suffice to say, I have no problem with my life style at work or at leisure. I certainly have no feelings of guilt that I am being paid by all you tax payers for alledgedly skiving during my official 9 to 5 employment. I sleep with a clear conscience and i don't have to justify my actions to SN.
The debate could go on Chris and I'm sure it will, without me.
I'll get you that pint one day, mate.

I don't get this "personal e-mails" stuff. I always either access my personal e-mail account using webmail, or take a laptop in and connect to the wireless guest LAN (if available) and use that for e-mails.

Just to butt in - if anyone wants to know any details on just HOW Websense does its thing - let me know, I'll be happy to explain (having installed and maintained several wob monitors for.... local councils! )
Just chucked in SurfControl for the first time as well... very different but the filtering does appear to be better.
The whole argument about web-surfing does come down the AUP you signed when you joined your company / council / whatever. If you are in breach then you will get disciplined. However, if you never signed anything then you can legally tell them to shove their hearing up their nose. (politlely)

Telboy, take it as a laugh I singled you out for your occasional saucy picture posts
IMHO Chris: I'd rather have a jaydee kind of employee than yourself for the following reason. I'm about to refer to you but as I don't actually know you I'm referring to the sort of people I suspect you might be like You don't expect any free rides at work and accordingly you play by the rules and work hard during the hours you are required to. You take your 10 minutes ciggy breaks and don't allow them to turn into 20 minutes. You have an hour for lunch and are back at your desk 59mins 30s after you left. You may work overtime every now and again but generally only when it doesn't interfere with your personal life and of course for time and a half or double time. You take all of you allocated holidays and generally ensure that you follow the companys rules and guidelines and that they follow the rules and guidelines.
Jaydee you are a different kind of employee. (same you thing here). You spent 10 mintes extra on the wife this morning and knowing you had no appointments wander in 10 minutes after 9. You work hard till 12 where you grab a sanny but something goes t!ts up so find yourself back at your desk at 12:20. You do NOT question this or make an record of the extra time. You spend 30 minutes on the net during the afternoon over a coffee and are preparing to go home at 5:00 when the boss ask if you'd do him a big favour and drop something off in town on your way home. Despite knowing your journey home will be an hour longer you do so without question. There is give and take with your attitude to work and your work has a give and take attitude with you.
As any engineer will tell you an inflexible bridge will come crashing down the first day the wind blows a little harder. If I wanted someone to data input or flip burgers then I'd have Chris everytime but if I want someone to fill a more mentally/resource demanding post I'd have Jaydee everytime despite his emails/internet because there is more flexability in his approach
IMHO and I'm not actually referring to either of your work ethics as I don't know you
As for getting paid for 30 hours and working 50....... no offence but who'se fault is that? I work the hours i'm paid for, any overtime is paid at the going rate and have always worked by that code, there's enough people getting rich off the backs of people working to long and hard and not getting paid for it.

I've had more than 5 people say to me over the last year that with the stress I've been under throughout this investigation that they'd have got themselves book off with stress. I'm quite thick skinned and felt I could cope so kept going to work but many others I know would be feet up and home because lifes 'too tough'

Whoops!!!
I'll leave Jaydee5 to his/her lifestyle then! Personally i wouldn't work for nothing for any reason, no matter what 'expectations' my bosses have of me. Been there, done it, got **** all recognition in the long run!!
Saxo Boy,
I know it's not aimed at me personqlly but here's how my day really goes.
Early shift. Get up at 0500hrs. Get into work at 0635hrs (25 mins early) so i've got all my kit sorted and am ready to react to a job should it come in. Usually admin and paperwork for first hour or so, making sure the vehicle is fuelled and prepped with all equipment on board should we need to react to something. Generally out on the streets for about 0730hrs. React to radio over a force wide area dealing with incidents as they come in. Grab a sandwhich and eat on the fly as we never know where we are next. React to radio transmissions throughout tour of duty unless called in for a briefing relating to a an ongoing job which might mean a warrant to be executed or the like. Tour of duty ends 1700hrs (10 hour shift) unless engaged in a job in which case its us till we're finished (can be an hour has been known to be 10.) Debrief operation and unload vehicle. Paperwork relating to days jobs. Changed and home, never on time!!
That's me, always first to volunteer for anything needed, as are the rest of the team and just about the most flexible i know. A 9 to 5 guy i'm not.
