Well I made a fool of a guy in a 535 this morning on the A43 in my 125bhp Saxo. BHP means squat when you have to crawl round the roundabouts. Yes he was annihilating me when he had time to recover on the straights but that means nothing to me. He looked far more upset when he was at the roundabouts a few car lengths in front of me and was coming off them behind me
I think I know what Pete was trying to say, that modern cars cosset you and make you think you're a good driver, whereas to get any performance out of an older car, you have to DRIVE it.

I stuck to the rear bumper of a Saxo VTS tonight in my non-turbo automatic Forester through the twisties. Does that make me a good driver? I still have a Knocklink in the (UK spec) WRX, though

iv'e had 2 saxo vts's and a classic mini cooper all of which i loved......but you dont need a cocklink in cars like that because a new engine is about the same price as a packet of crisps!

lol, it's kinda speeded up; even my highly un-modified scoob won't do 180mph. And I wouldn't be driving like that in those conditions - I'm that not scooby c@ck rider idiot...(ooops, resurected a pslewis waste of time thread

To be fair, I reckon most drivers need computer controlled aids to drive their cars for them as they have no desire or ability to deal with under/oversteer etc, whether it be deliberate or accidental.
I often point out to my mk4 Golf GTi driving friend as he understeers his way through another mildly damp kink in the road with his stupid little light flashing away on the dashboard, my traction control system is attached to the bottom of my right leg and it's called a 'foot'.
I say let the inept have their EBD, TCS, ESP ETC... It keeps them out of the way of us 'real drivers'!
As for the oily bits, progress may have robbed us of a bit of 'soul', but I reckon it's worth it; Did anyone see the Accord beat the DB5 and E Type on Top Gear last night???
ps. Pete, if you hate gadgets so much, why did you buy a 4wd, turbo charged car, presumably with electric windows, ABS, PAS, A/C etc. etc?

I've been giving this some thought as you clearly need a vehicle to show off your talents in and I think I've cracked it - you need a Morris Minor; No electric nannying, tiny engine and honest, no nonsense mechanicals. Rear drive as well, so it must be a proper driver's car. Apparently, we would still be left eating your dust though???
Alternatively, we could see if Subaru could make a 'woody' version of the Impreza wagon and call it a Traveller - Best of both worlds in your opinion, I bet!
