Shocks me the lack of compassion by some here - has no one seen the images of sad sick children that a few pennies' worth of penicillin might fix? Thank God it's them instead of you - and that is just pure luck of the draw...

What do you think happens with all this charity that is sent to african countries?I could tell you what REALLY happens but im afraid it would be way too un-pc for some of weak stomached lefties in this country.

I didn't see any of it, nor did I really want to.
I hear that Bono made some speech, no doubt about world poverty, hmm, right. OK, as soon as you and Bob sell everything you posses, live on the absolute bare minimum, work for minimum wage and convert all the money you got from selling everything into aid, and go and distrubute it in Africa, then you can stop harping on about how bad it is over there and **** off!
Yes it's somewhat sad, but there are reasons people are starving and dying. too many people is one of the reasons, so some birth control (doubt it'd be used due to either lack of knowledge of how to use it, or the fact they are catholic and against birth control) or compulsoary sterlisation might be a good start. Stop the population explosion, thus there would be less mouths to feed.
Next you want to make sure the money given does actually go to the people who need it and that it's not spent on weapons or syphoned off in other ways by corrupt goverments.
These people with lots of money, trying to get us to part with ours, maybe they should first set an example for the rest of us, but oh no, they won't give up everything to help out this cause they feel so strong about. Talk about hypocritical!

it's probably been said on here before but it did naff all 20 years ago and until they learn about contraception , which will help the aids problem too , and get rid of the corrupt governments , cancelling the debt will not help one iota !! unless you want more despots to buy more jeeps and private jets , and no i don't know what the answer is either !!

A recurring theme in this thread is how these wealthy people shouldn't make such a big issue of the African problem until they're prepared to live in poverty themselves or how they should give some of their money to charity.
I doubt anyone on these threads gives the same % of their income as some of the big names that appeared at Live8 do and I guarantee that none of the complainers have given as much of their time. The idea that you can't be rich AND have a conscience is laughable and IMHO only spouted by jealous and feckless people.
A lot of you appeared to have missed the whole point of what Live8 set out to achieve. The idea is not to give more aid. The idea is to let the leaders of the G8 know that there is a groundswell of public opinion amongst those people they represent that the G8 need to make a change in world economics and open up the world market to African countries and allow them to compete on an even footing. The idea is to make African governments answerable to their own people and the world i.e. cut out the corruption so that the debt can be dropped and the country can begin to invest in itself.
The thread title alone shows the kind of thought processes that go on in some people's heads. There's a big, wide world out there. Open your minds to it.

Some of the comments here are bordering on moronic.
Im shocked at how many people have a very poor grasp of what the MPH movement is actually trying to achieve.
Then this attitude that "pop stars should give up there own money"
what a crock of ****.
grow up and stop like bloody socialist councillors.
This attitude smacks of petty jealousy.
If its not jealousy of money, the only other explanation has to be jealousy of status and power.
Perhaps you are frustrated that you cant really do anything significant in the world because ultimatey you are all no-ones, who cant really do much other than bitch on this forum.
Hope this item reduces your cynicism
Artists and record firms who have seen album sales soar after Live 8 should donate their profits to charity, Pink Floyd star Dave Gilmour has said.
"I will not profit from the concert," the guitarist said. "This is money that should be used to save lives."

I reckon we should be proud that the force behind live 8 came from Britain.
Not ******* france, not the US (like hell), not Australia, not Germany or Japan....
But Britain.
I reckon its done our image a ton of good, and rather than than moaning, we should feel good about it.
Ive always thought Britain was the one of the most generous and caring countries in the world, and now I know it is.

You forget when anything good happens in Britain it’s bred into us to slag it off, it just comes naturally. If live 8 had been thought up in any other country everybody probably would have been praising it, but as it’s a British thing it has to be slated. Sometimes I really can’t get my head round the press and public of this country, no other nation in the world criticises their selves quite like us. No matter what you do in Britain someone will always find something wrong with it and blow it out of all proportion.

I'm not jealous of the wealth that Bob Geldof or Bono have. I just find it odd that they really want to make a difference, and there is a simple way to do that, and make a massive statement, give up everything you have and give the money to whatever/whomever to get things rolling. When you're living on benefit because you have given up everything for a cause you believe so strongly in, people might take even more notice.
As for profits from sales of albums due to Live 8, well, that'll be profits after the record companies take their share, can't see them being all weepy eyed and giving two hoots about some starving kid in a country far, far away.
There are very select things I donate to, and starving kids in Africa, or removing world debt are not on my list. I'm probably small minded as I don't see it as "my problem", but to some extent it's not my problem, I'm not the one in debt, so why should I care?
I think we'll see another set of concerts in another five or ten years time as I really cannot see much changing, and if that's the case, what was the point of all this? Throwing good money after bad.

tiggs. floyd. 50million+ albums sold, every one multi-platinum. 25million for "dark side of the moon" on its own with 10 years in the US Hot 100. did they have any hits? yup. you could say that.

I haven’t read all the thread, nor do I have the time (unlike popular culture icons I have work to do), but it seems to me that Live8 is just another misguided publicity stunt and won’t achieve much (if anything).
Africa would be in state it’s in now (ie a complete mess) with or without aid, debt, foreign do-gooders or any other of these things that “help”
I have a family friend who worked for the UN food program, his description of it’s effectiveness: “like pissing in the ocean”
The sad fact of life is that Africa as a continent needs to find it’s own path and climb out of it’s hole alone, that may well take a very long time (judging by history)
The state of Africa has nothing to do with globalization, colonial past, debt, trade barriers or anything like that – it’s entirely down to it’s inhabitants, they broke it and only they can fix it (or not).
I’m sick of hearing about those self-publicists who harp on about political issues when they have no real solutions (that’s you Geldof etc). Cancel debt………then what Bob????????????
Oh and Live aid didn’t really feed the world either
Leave it to the politicians, they may not be perfect but at least they know what they’re doing (usually ).

There's more slavery now (and in the past too) in Africa than there ever was in the USA or Europe.
Oil componies have to "bribe" them, it's the only way they can do business. Now if the African govenments weren't so corrupt they could do business a little differently
So, yes I'm afraid it's down to them....
