I should have stopped to help tonight.

Always stop if there's a few people around or it's a reasonably busy road, but the risk is a bit much late and on your own on a quiet road.
But then as with Ali, would have def. stopped if I was in the Landy, mainly because I have several tons of recovery gear in the back!

Tut,
Why are you people so scared???
I once stopped on saddleworth moors of M62,
I was on my own and a seen a BIG 6ft guy standing on the side of his car, flagging a car,it was 11 pm december it was freezing,
i didnt even think twice i stopped guy walked over, and said in the back of the car was a lady and a 1 yr old child, child was freezing,so he said can they wait in my car until the recovery service comes,we all waitied in my car until the recovery came.He told me that he had been waiting there for over a hour.
So if i ever broke down or you broke down, youd want someone to stop for me,dont get out of the car lock your doors open a bit of the window BUT DO ASK,if they need help.
Ive stopped many times in any car im in,and i always tend to stop at night espoecially saddleworth moors,So far nothing has happend and hopefully nothing will.

To be honest mate I wouldn't have stopped (except maybe to roll the window a little and ask if there was anyone I could phone for them). I certainly wouldn't have offered a tow.
Mind you my Saxo couldn't pull a condom off a limp c*ck

And if it had been a young nubile blonde then you couldn't have stopped quickly enough to help her out and then told the nipper not to mention the incident to Mummy in case she got the wrong idea.
Different scenario, same ending. Sonny still thinks you're a tosser for asking him to lie to Mummy.
I'm a mug so I probably would have stopped but there's no way I'm towing anything with my car but then the last time I helped someone he ripped me off for a fiver at a motorway services.

Really is a difficult situation to comment on. I can certainly understand your concern since you had the little lad with you. I suppose its a matter of assessing the situation as you see it and then making the decision.
I always think back to when I was in a car which broke down in the middle of an American winter in 30 degrees below freezing and a bloke stopped and got us to the next village 20 miles down the road. This was in the middle of the night and we were in real danger from the extreme cold if we had been left there.

I would have stopped but not used my car to attempt to tow him out. When my car broke down recently the Breakdown Mechanic who arrived decided it need to go to the garage, but said it needed a total lift. This was due to the danger of the spolier etc getting damaged by towing equipment. If the professionals aren't willing to try towing it, I m not going to tow with it!
If I had a tow bar then might have a go. It costs nothing to stop and there is nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the road waiting for assistance. Even if you know assistance is on the way it is nice if other motorists stop to check you are ok. Gives you faith in mans humanity.

If it hadn't been a balmy summer evening, say, winter on the moor for example, then I would probably have behaved differently.
