This is how a small number of volunteers willing to bomb, shoot and die can easily change the political landscape in the face of weak leadership such as Red Ken and Blair. When you see them on the TV with their long faces it is important to remember that it was them who brought this upon London.

"An earlier bomb threat targeting a mosque in east London has been given the all-clear by police."
Sounds like it was suspect bomb at this mosque rather than hiding terrorists. just taken this from Skynews.com

The officers who chased the suspect into the station have got some guts thats for sure, thinking this guy was about to detonate a bomb and they had to catch him - makes you think what would be going through your mind if it was you. Too right they shot him 5 times, you wouldn't want to be pinning him down while he reaches for the detonator button!

I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I suspect that Jasey is closer the mark.
Edited to add - They were definitely out mob-handed in day-glow jackets around Warren Street and Great Portland Street stations this morning.

Mr Whitby, told BBC News: "I was sitting on the train reading my paper.
"I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'!
"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.
"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him.
"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he's dead." Passenger Briony Coetsee said: "We were on the Tube and then we suddenly heard someone say, 'Get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots."

I also wondered what made them chase him. Did they have intelligence on him or was it because he ran ? Apparantly he had a thick padded jacket on, unusual for hot weather ?

I would suggest that any city where the Mayor has been a keen supporter of terror and the PM invites known terrorists for tea would be a good place to start in such a quest. They'll not take much softening up.
Of course the invasion is a useful recruiting tool, of that there is no doubt, and there is a long tradition of martyrs dying for their country so it works in the favour of the terrorist. However, as you say, it is likely that plans for this action have been in place for some time. There have, for example, been close ties between Irish and Arab terrorists and countries (Lybia supplied arms to the IRA for example and Israel had connections with Loyalist terrorists) for a long time now so there are strategic alliances in place that have been developed over years, decades even. If I were an Aarb terrorist wanting to bring explosives, or a dirty bomb, into London then I would bring it in through Ireland (where security is low key and an Arab terror threat low) using existing supply and transport networks developed over years of struggle against the British and I would use alliances I had forged in the past to help me get it in. This is no amazing insight on my part, it is just a simple logical approach using the resources available to the terrorist.

Interesting thing - what are your options as an armed police officer running down a suspected suicide bomber?
- Try to identify if he actually is a bomber?
- Try to disable the guy?
- Try to kill the guy before he detonates the suspected bomb?
You really are in a lose-lose situation because if the guy is a bomber he is intent on killing himself and others so you need to shoot and kill the guy or totally disable him when he is away from anybody. Unfortunately if he turns out to be just a fare-dodger then it's a pretty heavy burden to bear.
I have to agree, these guys have my total admiration for a job I could just not do!
