Sorry, but you got what you deserve, litter is so annoying and cleaning it up adds to the locals council tax. Pity more councils dont enforce it. They would only have to stand outside McDonalds and we wouldnt have any council tax!

If you knew the penalty you can't really complain. Littering is dreadful these days, so many people seem to have no pride and can't be bothered to find a bin to drop their rubbish in.

If you visit other countries the litter problem seems to be virtually non existent, makes me feel ashamed to see the crud all over our streets and in peoples' front gardens from ignoramt passers-by. It is difficult to believe the chip boxes all over our town that the holiday makers just dump on the road when they have finished, even with a bin a few yards away!

I agree it seems a bit hard to get charged £50 for a cigarette end but I bet you will remember it next time.

Drop your finished but still burning cig in a paper filled bin.... They'll be begging you to drop them on the floor again in no time and the fining concept will soon be rescinded... Street Cleaners are cheaper than firemen...

I think its a good idea IMO, but....I recently went to Edinburgh for the first time and saw the bin wagons with all the anti fagend literature written down the side of them.

"Nice idea I thought", so when I finished the cigarette I'd been smoking I looked for a place to put it and there were no bins nearby. Finally found one and it had nowhere to stub the cigarette out, so what do you do?

Stub it out on the plastic bin or the floor, either way you will get a load of burn marks all over.

The whole of Edinburgh seemed a bit **** though tbh, although the people were very nice.

So if you had been drinking out of a drinks can, and couldn't find a bin nearby, you'd just have dropped it instead? Or would you have taken it home or until you found a suitable bin?

The point being, can you not get small devices to carry upon yourselves which will hold used *** butts???

Edinburgh IS trying to install bins with *** disposal facilities in the city centre....guess it'll take a while to roll out.

It does seem a bit odd that so many places go on about litter and then don't provide and any bins. Peeves me that there are no bins on the station platforms to drop your empty coffee cup in when you have finished.

i provide a litter bin next to the self serve hoovers at work and "scum" still hoover there car out and jujst drop litter on the floor, the bin has a bright yellow cover over it, you can not miss it

a mate with another wash has the same problem

its a regular thing to walk down there with a litter picker and find anything from half drunk bottles of coke to full blown upright vacum cleaners

although on suday i walked down there and found 2 DVD`s still in there cases which was a pleasant suprise lmao

Smokers in general are lazy *******, so it's about time councils cracked down on them. Where MrsD (a born again non-smoker) works they provided a bin and facilities for stubbing out *** ends at a sheltered point outside their new building when they moved in, within a month you could not see the ground for *** ends because the ignorant ******* couldn't be bothered cleaning up after themselves The company employed the simple expedient of banning smoking on ALL company property, including the car park

I agree that smokers shouldn't be allowed to drop their *** ends on the floor as it is unsightly and also that they should be fined for "littering" - perhaps £50 is a little harsh but then i'm sure it would get the message across

But as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, where can you put them? Me and the missus went to Banff in Canada in March of this year - while smoking in public is not banned it is banned in Bars/Restaurants and so on. But they have plenty of bins available outside and they also have an "ashtray" attached to the side of them - perfect

'Littering' should carry a fine - but smokers shouldnt be singled out anymore than say drinkers of Dr Pepper or eaters of mars bars by the fining process...

I never drop any litter, but putting a coke can into a plastic bin is not going to set it on fire.

All they need to do is install those bins with ashtrays on the top - in the end I stubbed the cigarette out on the bin and placed it inside, but it left an unsightly mark on the bin. You get hundreds of folk doing that and the bins will be knackered very quickly.

And I know I should give up and its not good for me, but while I have a choice to smoke I dont want the preachers telling me I shouldnt.

As I pointed out, good idea, *** ends are unsightly, and all cities should do it, but at least provide proper, safe disposal recepticals, simple as that!!

I dispose in the correct manner where available and b*ll*cks to it if nothing is provided. I find the most sensible thing to do is take a quick look around before you chuck it in the gutter or scrape it on the pavement. Just to make sure that the litter police or, even worse, a self-appointed bastion of the countryside isn't looking.

To the preachers; do your cars pump out 0% pollutants or something? Do you live by self-sustainable means and not enjoy the evil luxury that is generated electricity? Is every product you use biodegradable?
