I dispose in the correct manner where available and b*ll*cks to it if nothing is provided. I find the most sensible thing to do is take a quick look around before you chuck it in the gutter or scrape it on the pavement. Just to make sure that the litter police or, even worse, a self-appointed bastion of the countryside isn't looking.

To the preachers; do your cars pump out 0% pollutants or something? Do you live by self-sustainable means and not enjoy the evil luxury that is generated electricity? Is every product you use biodegradable?

No?

Stop preaching about non-degradable ciggie ends then.

Either practice what you preach or stop preaching.

Good point well made

I was being a bit belligerent I admit, and I don't really have that attitude. However, I still make a valid point. You guys come in "all guns blazing" blaming smokers for the plight of the world. Try and keep things in perspective please. Chemical and toxic waste is dumped on a daily basis into the sea. Fast food wrappers, nappies and bits of car litter our motorways. Despite best intentions hardly any food wrapping is biodegradable. Smokers didn't do it all!

I agree with fining but I agree with DW; fining is harsh when no alternative is allowed for.

Job creation?

I have to smoke outside the office (as I'm sure many others do) and constantly see some guy from Westminster Council walking along with his bin on wheels and brush cleaning up the discarded ends and other cr@p - if they stopped people from dropping their *** ends on the floor would this guy lose his job? Doubtful because other people will drop anything they feel like - the problem does not lie with smokers alone

No I didn't. It's about litter, not smokers.
It's about "*** ends" being seen as "acceptable" litter by smokers.

Use reusable nappies too

The alternative is keeping the *** ends on your person until suitable disposal is available - what is wrong with that?????????

No-one will answer this!!

Nowt wrong with that at all If a bin isn't near by then I will put it out, get shot of any remaining baccy and put it back in the packet until such time that I can get rid of it - but try getting the other x 1000's or however many it is to do that - it will never happen

Is it acceptable to dispose of roll-ups, as they have no filter, by the flick or drop method?

Hehe... anyone remember the public information film about littering that had the slogan “Everyone’s Got An Excuse – What’s Yours?” This had the following in it:

Woman with pushchair: “I’ve just about had enough of clearing up after that little madam”

Bloke emptying car ash tray: “Every time by son borrows the car it comes back stinking like a filthy ashtray”

Teenager: “It’s alright; dad says it gives people jobs”

Black guy: “The whole place is a mess anyway”

White guy: “It can’t do any harm – I put it out of the way”

One by one, all these excuses are getting trotted out on this thread.

I have to be honest in that before i was fined i never really considered cigarettes as litter. I always assumed that a bit of rain would wash it away and that it would break down to a small bit of cotton, that would eventually degrade. I would never drop a cigarette on the pavement, always on the road so it would get flushed along to the drains. However after much discussion here and with other people, i now realise that actually i am just as bad as what i would call "scum" who throw crisps and sweet wrappers on the pavement. I actually get wound up when i see this happening and have on occassions asked the little gits to pick up after them. This is usually retorted with a bunch of swear words.

I am in fact just as bad as them - i just never really thought about it. I will always dispose of them in a dustbin( making sure it is properly extinguished). I will not however put it back in my *** packet as that stinks really bad - i will instead find a bin asap. Thank you everyone for making realise the error of my ways.

Considering how much my Council Tax is to cover waste disposal, I think I have done my bit. It must be easier for the waste technicians to collect waste from bins than picking it up off the floor.

Why can't you carry around your used *** butts until finding a suitable disposal facility?
Probably as it may burn a hole in their pockets. Once they have stood on it to put it out I can't see them picking it back up again TBH.

If you want to control people's behaviour you need to encourage as well as punish, and providing the facilities for people to properly dispose of their waste is part of that.

Filters are not, as commonly thought, made of paper, but a non-biodegradable type of plastic called cellulose acetate. They also have traces of lead, cadmium and arsenic in them, meaning they need to be disposed of properly.

Recently, my 10 month old son managed to pick up a not easily seen *** butt in a park and put it in his mouth Luckily caught it before it caused too much damage. Still, you smokers carry on dropping them....I'm sure he enjoys it

As an ex smoker I know very well that is is very easy to pinch the hot bit of the ciggy off the butt and tread on it, that bit is not noticeable on the ground. Easy then to put the butt in a bin, or even in your pocket and take it home, like all the other litter that is created.

I smoke rollies with no filter, so my "litter" is just a piece of degradable paper and some old leaves

Next you'll be saying that everyone should clean up the bits of rubber left from their tyres on the road. And I can gaurantee that most on here pollute the environment much more than me, with gas guzzling Scoobs, as I only drive 3000 miles a year

Next question : Why are smokers so hugely defensive about their habit?

Cos we're so f*cking persecuted by you holier than thou types and we really haven't got a solid defence for doing it. There are no advantages to point out so we resort to the lowest common denominator.

How about if we were to give up then we'd get fat from all the food we'd eat to counteract the smoking? I personally don't wanna get fat cos my arms are too skinny

(Please Note - this one doesn't work if u smoke AND you're fat )
