People are too trusting, but on the flip side these people do make a living out of being theiving ***** and clearly are good at their chosen line of work.
Recently, I was selling an RX8, Z4 and Crossfire and some of the calls were clearly scoping out the potential for being gullible and weak b y asking ridiculous payments like will you accept international money transfer etc or escrow payments. In particular - and this is a prejudice based on experience -I refused to do any business with anybody Irish or west african based on scam stories doing the rounds for years.
My mobile number was like scammer and scumbag central for about 2 weeks with almost every caller having a foreign accent or just a downright *****. In the end I fooked it off and part exed my Z4 down to the scoob just to save the hassle and potential for a scam.
It just isnt worth the risk I'm afraid, and I know its unfortunate that this casts a shadow on millions of genuine folk, but the few who are bang at it means the risk is too great for me - and I simply won't entertain them.
Unfortuntely, some are either too trusting, too gullible or too desperate to sell their car and get sucked in.
I have fallen a scam in the past and we probably all do at some stage, and when it happened to me i was mortally embarrassed and my mates still take the **** 8 years on! That was down to naivity (sp) and not knowing the ways of the world, but fortunately it wasnt my own money which I lost and I can laugh about it.
When its your car and your money though, there is no excuse for not being thorough.

You can see why so many people part ex instead of the hassle of selling privately - quite apart from the scammers, you get the tyre kickers, test pilots, 17 year olds, people not turning up to view when they say they will, and you've waited in all afternoon etc...

IMHO Anyone selling a performance car should make it clear that they'll not permit someone else to conduct the test drive unless documentary evidence is provided indicating comprehensive cover on other people's cars. No under 25s too! :-) Saves a lot of dreamers/test pilots/timewasters.
You can vet them on the phone.....if they ask does it have a turbo, you know the kind of person you're dealing with! :-)

Or if they ask 'has it got NOS' !!!
3 little kids about 8 years old were looking at mine the other day, I was watching them out of the bedroom window to check they werent messing with it - all 3 had their noses pressed up against the passenger window ( modern day equivalent of the sweet shop ? ) - one saw the boost and temp gauges on the centre pillar - and went 'LOOOOOOK !!!! ITS GOT NOS !!!! NNOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAY !!!' - personally I blame the 'fast n the furious'
