XTR is worth the extra in my humble opinion but not for road riding, get a road bike. But you do need to change chains every three months or so or you are going to **** your cassette and front rings. Change them every 9 to 12 months for hassle free riding.......

I must admit I have never had any XTR but will say the diference between the Shimano 105 and the Campag kit on my new road bike is amazing. The Campagnolo stuff just feels sooooo much more positive and even sounds better.
The XT on the MTB is also very good !! I find it hard to believe that XTR could be any better. Lighter, granted but better...cant see it. (amd I wont spend the money to be proved wrong )

Oh, and I do change chains every few months, as well as alternating them, degreasing/cleaning them etc. It makes a difference, but when you ride through the winter in the Chilterns, the mud just destroys XTR. I've had no problems with my cheapo On-One singlespeed - 2000 miles on the original BMX chain and £15 sprockets through the most disgusting of conditions, with probably only one proper strip-down clean in all that time.

I have just replaced my second XTR middle chainring this year. They are rubbish. Have replaced it with a Middleburn hardcote now they do them for XTR.
I also replaced XTR jockey wheels (£27...OUCH) XTR cassette with an XT one and a new SRAM chain. Cost's more to run than the STI!!
It's still not shifting right so probably needs new cables

the marin is now going onto ebay as is.
I won a well modified OrangeC16R on ebay.
That has a mix of XT(shifters/vbrakes)/Deore (front rear mech's) and Xtr (rear hub) components.
Also has Pace RC35 forks
The elastomer version too! (how old ) no oil or hydraulics to go wrong..

Is that Middleburn middle ring for an M960 setup? Flipping hope so, as I only ever use middle ring (well, granny for perhaps 1% of the time) and big ring=bash ring.
Now using SRAM cassette and chain, and will probably go SRAM when the rear mech dies.

M960 4 bolt pattern
Half the price of XTR http://www.ChainReactionCycles.com/M...x?ModelID=7095 and seems to change just as smoothly. I never use granny either
