Not if you take a LAD Motorsport head re-work to race spec and 200 bhp! - Stll does 35 + mpg and pulls in 6th from idle!!

Anyone changed induction system - already sound great, but heard a std 306 tother day and it sounded like it was on webbers - judging by std appearance of car i doubt that - would a sport filter or the right cone kit safely give that thorougbred webber sound (like the old twincam escort rally cars..)

I loved my misses gold 6, only sold it becuase mileage was getting high (108k) and was doing 120 a day in it to work through B roads, loved it. Would probably have another one for a cheap round ability one day.

Re best hot hatch ever? from a driving point of view..
The mk1 golf started it all, most mags usually the 205 Gti was for a while, but its widely regarded between GTi-6/Rallye or the Clio Williams. I've driven them all and the Williams probably pipped it, but felt far more thrashed and tinny than the 6, and didn't feel it would do the mileage. The 6 is also very tuneable.

Going by recent reviews, both these have now been surpassed, by the new (and limited) Clio 182 Trophy. Or the Clio Cup (182) if your looking at mass produced.

On another note, I always like to put a spanner in the works if people mention cars like the S3, R32, etc in the same group as hot hatches, becuase you can then chuck in the integrale evo, esc cossie (later small turbo version) and pulsar Gti-R. All hatches that still feel raw, great to drive, just happen to have 4wd and cost more to run.

my missus has one and it goes and handles OK wouldnt say the best but its just sooooooo bland it looks like the diesal and a hot hatch should stand out like the s1 rs or the wide archs on the older clio.The standard seats are rubbish the driving posision is cramped,sorry but this would not be my first choice by a long long way the older hot hatchs are so much more like a hot hatch and feel alot more exciting even if they are not as quick.

All the negatives on here are true - "looks a bit dull", "seats aren't very good"....etc. Reminds me of when Mr Clarkson tested a new Ferrari on Top Gear a few weeks ago and said "there is one negative, the aircon switch is a bit of a stretch".

And another thing! When EVO mag tested the clio 172 against the GTI6 and declared the clio winner, the clio was wearing michelin exalto rubber, the GTI6 was wearing desperately bad Pirelli P6000 rubber.

I Know how much an advantage this gives as I swapped the pirellis on my '6, that spun in 2nd under accelerattion to the michelin exaltos that gripped, gripped, gripped. Made a B I I I G difference to the grip and speeds you could carry through corners, and you didn't get brown trousers floaty rear end in the wet moments on the michelins,..........which is nice!

But yes it is a great car and I'd love to have another, sigh

The GTi-6's ive owned had 2 different types of tyres from new, one had the P6000, the other had Michelin Pilot Sports.

Rule number 1 when conducting any experiment - synchronize all variables, thus making it fair.

I have P-6000's on my road car, they're "ok" as an "ok" tyre on an "ok" car, for any other purpose than that they're about as useful as a chocolate kettle.

imo the best hatch that is hot is the lancia delta integrale evo.

Grale's are indeed pretty awesome, i had 3 (8v, Evo 1 & 2) prices go from 3k for a 88-89 8v to 20K for a mint Evo 2 cat Dealer collection.

But to keep on topic i've just bought a 306 GTI 6, W reg in Astor grey, 48k's pretty mint for £4.5K and in the real real world it would defo keep up with the Grale's and the 2 Impreza classic's i've had - the handling is superb and their pretty damn cheap to run and very stealth if de-badged..........

The 6sp gearbox, and its only on the one lock, not the other way.........

Interesting thread, having owned both a 306 GTi and a 205 I can say the 306 is the better all round car. Its so dynamic to drive and the passive rear steering is so prominent and is an absolute blast once you get used to it. There are hot hatches nowadays that would easily out perform it (CTR, Leon Cupra R etc) but considering its 10 years old next year it still holds its own and demands respect from most other hot hatch drivers.

The 'Williams' Clio would make it into a top 3 Im sure, its just a pity Williams motorsport had absolutley nothing to do with the car whatsoever!!

It seems the way for manufacturers to go is to just see who can get the most power from a FWD hot hatch, see Vauhall, Ford, Seat, VW. They seem to have forgotten what a drivers car is made of. The 306 is most definatley the last of a breed that we will never see the likes of again.

Yep, that post pretty much highlights everything.

Leon Cupra, Astra, Focus etc - masses of power through front wheels. torque steer everywhere. All these modern hatches have big fundamental flaws, unlike the '6 that has none. Plus, they cost alot more than a '6 in equivalence.

Yet there was another Evo review where the 306 won, then Autocar did a test with the 172 as well, the 306 won, with the 106 GTi 2nd

Because the 6 speeb box is ******* massive and sticks into the n/s arch

I did the clutch on mine at Easter and I can confirm that it is one big heavy lump of metal!

To compare, my CTR turning circle was not much better and my Clio Cup wasn't that much better...

would be nice to have a little more straight line power - but the same applies for anything doesn't it - you always want more.

Other than that, and silly nit-picking about turning circles and so on I simply cannot fault it.

Never been in a hot hatch that I like as much. The Civic Type-R is a better quality car, but the '6 just puts a tick in every single box, can any other HH's boast that?

Everybody likes to harp on about how good there car is on here, subaru or not - so I thought I'd boost the ego of my Pug a little to.

Never driven a 306, but if they are anything like the 205 then they will be great. I'll probably buy a Rallye at some point, currently selling my 405 Mi16 so may have a look when thats gone.
