As you say it's the best hot hatch ever according to a magazine article written 7 years ago.

Thanks.
I've got one ('99), and frankly as an overall car to own long term I'd say it's pretty grim TBH.

It goes OK if you're gunning it, and handling is good. If you cut out the BS thats where its good points end IMO.

Other than those 'plus' points it's no different to several other 'ordinary' 306's I've had, i.e identical seats, dashboard and everthing else. No way does it feel special at all, a very ordinary and dull daily driver.

As for the £18k when new price tag, well what can you say, just shows what idiots there are out there LOL.

Should have bought the diesel then lad. It's clear you're missing the point. A bit like saying "VTEC is hard work". Or, if you wanted to 'jazz it up' - some white dials perhaps???

QUOTE: "The best hot hatches are not necessarily the fastest: a good one needs more than just a powerful engine. They have to have agile suspension, well-placed gear ratios, loads of grip and excellent balance, as well as razor-sharp reactions and racy responses".

Looks are subjective, the GTi-6's strengths are purely factual based.

I never doubted it was a good hot hatch 7 years ago, I said that on an earlier thread.

Great then, great now.

The rest is subjective and purely 'opinion', and one should never begrudge somebody of one of those.

Boring

Ranout of things to say I take it.

I'm far from rose-tinted-glasses mentality, Hell - I admitted several car purchasing mistakes, much like my Mk1 Clio 172 (the one you said was 'gay' when you had your Impreza). Remember the time? When all RWD cars were death-traps (when I had the M3) and I'd end up in the ditch cos of it?

Rose tinted glasses indeed. lol

Oh, sorry I forgot - you're a "late developer".

Am I wrong but was the Golf GTi not the daddy in the early days, this was then surpassed by the 205GTi which was then beaten by the Clio williams, then a load of crap was made until the 172/182 clio came along? Evo mag seem to think the 182 with the clio williams close behind.

306 is a great car for sure but im not sure it was ever good enough to hold the title.

I didn't like that old heap when I owned it, and was happy to see the back of it. It was dull as hell. So no, I think it's Davy who said it's the best car ever made, much like the Impreza was when he had that.....

Regarding your opinions about hot hatches, which were spot on except 1 little flaw, read the below link (again), last paragraph:

....or just do a google - plenty of articles stating the letters "P e u g e o t" and the numbers "3 0 and 6" in the same sentence as best/definitive hot hatch etc. As there are for the 205 in the early late 80's/early 90's, and Golf GTi in the mid 80's.

PMSL. How funny it is reading back over that!! I'll be the first to admit how very wrong I was back then, and how scary it is how much I sounded like someone else I know.....!!

"I was in denial, and I soon got bored" at putting more oil in it than I did petrol, amongst all the other crap involved in owning the poxy old thing.

Well, we live, we learn - and we progress. I've subsequently learnt that car ownership should only make one person happy - yourself, so from now on I'm far more open about what I like/dislike, with the purpose of pleasing nobody other than myself.

....just been thinking about this.

Apart from the high oil consumption, all the problems he had are the same I had, only squeezed into a 5 month time frame, Rather than 3 years for mine.

I just didn't like the car enough to spend the sort of money on it that I was spending. If it wasn't one thing it was another.

Anyway, that's been done to death - I'm happy now with the Pug.

Agreed.

As my above previous post, not interested in talking about it - this is a positive thread, not a negative one.
